"Church celebrates eight years"

Pastor Katrina Deason and members of Liberty Prayer Chapel in Hinesville have a lot to celebrate. After eight years, the church has seen many goals come to fruition, and Liberty Prayer Chapel is impacting the community.
The congregation has a grand celebration planned. The event, which begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, will include a national recording artist and an international speaker.
Musician DeWayne Woods, who recently released a new CD, “My Life’s Lyric,” will perform a concert. Local recording artist Terry Newsome, who recently released his CD, “Soul’d Out,” will appear with Woods.
A portion of the concert proceeds will be donated to the Liberty County Manna House where Deason serves as director. Every year during the Prayer Chapel’s anniversary celebration, the church makes a donation to Manna House. “The church is responsible for feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and visiting those in prison,” Deason said.
At 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, Pastor Donald Battle of Divine Faith Ministries International in Atlanta will speak to the congregation. Battle has appeared on the Christian television station, TBN, many times. He will discuss empowerment and impartation at Liberty Prayer Chapel.
At 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, Dr. Cindy Trimm, world-renowned ambassador, speaker and author of the bestselling book, “Rules of Engagement,” will speak at the church. Trimm will conduct an invitation-only leadership course. At 6 p.m. that evening, Trimm will host an anointing service. On Sunday morning, Sept. 5, she will conduct the morning service.
“This is our eighth church anniversary, and the number eight means new beginning,” Deason said. “We are looking at a fresh, new perspective on ministry overall, communitywide and church-wide. I want God to get us better prepared to meet the needs of the military as they transition back. I am praying for a new, fresh perspective and new energy to complete the assignment in Hinesville.
“We must complete the mandate for taking care of the community. As the deployed soldiers come back to the community, we must be ready as a church to counsel, to pray and to meet their needs. I have a real heart for transition for when the soldiers return,” she said. “Dr. Trimm is a troubleshooter. She deals with organizations and social organizations that show you how to handle special leadership issues. God knows what the community needs as soldiers re-acclimate back into their homes, churches and communities. I am hoping that we will get a fresh perspective and a tender heart as to how to deal with the military.”
Deason has plans for her church. “During 2010, my goals are to allow God to finish us up on the level we are on and promote us to the next level,” she said. “This year, some doors closed and some opened. It is time for new dimension. But we must complete where we are before going to the next level.”
In addition to her duties at the church and Manna House, the pastor has an early-morning gospel program on radio station WOAH 106.3.
“We have done it for the past eight years. It is geared towards the military. We have prayer and devotion,” she said.
Deason said seating for the anniversary celebration is limited. For information about tickets or the festivities, call 368-7335. Liberty Prayer Chapel is at 302 W. Memorial Drive in Hinesville.

Mo Soul Music - Terry Newsome with Praiz People

“Jesus Cool” is the title of Track 2 on gospel singer-songwriter Terry Newsome’s third project, Mo Soul Music.

The song, featuring Take 6-like harmonic complexity, is also an apt description of Newsome and Praiz People’s unflappable rhythm and praise style.

On Mo Soul Music, the Hinesville, Georgia-based artist and his coterie of background vocalists and musicians piece together a modern vibe behind lyrics that stress the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus. Despite the frailties of humanity, Newsome argues in his songs, Jesus is cool, a “friend always around” who “never tells nobody’s business.” Jesus is not so much a robed icon to worship from afar, but a loving best friend in a comfortable-fitting jersey and blue jeans who has your back, no matter how bad of a friend you happen to be at the time.

Of the thirteen cuts on the album, “You Mean More” is the most popular with Newsome's fan base. Its introduction features dense atmospheric overtones and rich, lovely harmonies suitable for ringing off cathedral walls. Newsome’s warmly emotional solo on “More” turns into a preacher’s gentle altar call as Praiz People supports him with a steady, breathy cadence.

The project’s emotional apex is “Mama Smile,” a touching, reflective piece about watching mother transition to her final reward. In a manner not unlike the hip-hopera rhythms of Dave Hollister, Newsome delivers an RnB recitative about the lady who lays dying, telling Jesus “she loved you to death.”

But Newsome is not down for long. A bonus track “Just Praiz” celebrates a “jumping, screaming and shouting” kind of praise, while the beats come down harder than anywhere else on the album.

Newsome notes that his songs are more than just words and melodies, but testimonies. This certainly rings true, as Mo Soul Music seems to be more about the message than about a bouncy melody or clever hook.

Nevertheless, the album is an appealing and enjoyable listen from an artist who was named Grand Prize Winner of the hit TV series “CATS” (Christian Artist Talent Search) on the Inspiration Network, and of the “Gospel Superfest New Artist Showcase” on TBN's "Backstage Pass."

Sampson native wins Christian recording contract
(July 30, 2005)

Staff Intern
For the second time in July, a native of Sampson County has achieved the coveted trophy many musicians strive for: a recording contract.
Terry Ray Newsome, 36, formerly of Faison, was awarded a national recording contract at a Christian Artists Talent Search in Charlotte. This contract is with Point of Grace Entertainment, a company that is distributed by Sony-Red Distribution. Sony-Red is an organization located in Ervin, Texas.
Newsome moved to Georgia in 1994. Newsome said that a year later, in 1995, he began to write and record music. His three-track single, "Gotta Be You," was the piece that won him a spot on the Christian Artist Talent Search, the national event that he triumphed at on Friday, July 22.
Newsome stated that his wife submitted his single in secret, and he was pleasantly surprised when he received a message notifying him that he was chosen as a finalist. Over a thousand people from all over the nation (and outside of the United States as well) applied, but there were only sixty-four finalists chosen. The event was held at Charlotte, NC, and lasted for a week before the winner was named.
Newsome is delighted to be the winner of what he called a Christian version of American Idol. The Christian Artist Talent Search is ran by Inspirational Network, a national organization that has its own television channel. Newsome said that it was an appealing event to compete in for musicians all over the world, and he was blessed to get the chance to participate.
"God gave me some good stuff," said Newsome of his musical talent. Newsome, who specializes in gospel music but says he also adds rock and jazz into his songs, is currently putting the finishing touches on his full-length album titled "Soul Music," which should be finished by next month. He began recording it at the end of 2003, and the 19-track piece is getting closer and closer to completion. It will be put out by Point of Grace Entertainment, the label he won the contract with at the Charlotte competition.
Newsome currently resides in Hinesville, Georgia, a town that is located near Savannah. He lives with his wife, Jennie Lynn Newsome (also a Sampson County native - she was born in Newton Grove). Newsome also has two sons; Tarence (also known as T.J.) is 16 and his brother, Kyle, is 12. Newsome is the son of Claudie Newsome (who still resides in Sampson County) and the late Ammie Newsome of Faison.

"FREE CONCERT MAKES CD"

Free concert makes CD
By: Andrea Washington, Staff Writer09/08/2006

Terry Newsome's new album cover.
Looking for a concert this weekend without traveling far? You're in luck.

Local gospel artist Terry Newsome will perform in a free concert Saturday at 6 p.m. at Live Oak Church of God in Hinesville.

"It's going to be a good time," Newsome said. "We're going to be recording for a 15-song remix album and filming for the next DVD."

Mixed with the singer's vocals will be a live band, comedy skits, and an open altar call during the show's second half. There will also be giveaways, T-shirts, visors, posters, CDs, DVDs and an autograph session.

Although Newsome has performed at national events and won both the 2005-2006 Christian Artist Talent Search and the 2005-2006 new artist showcase for Gospel Superfest, this is the first time he will open up his life and music to this area on a large scale.

According to the 37-year-old singer, his late mother played a huge role in his life and music. Most of his memories are of her reading the Bible, singing and praying for the family.

"My mother was the one that prayed for us and made us really understand who God was and is," Newsome said. "Somewhere in every song you'll hear something about mama or how she raised us."

A quick listen to Newsome's latest album, Soul Music, and it is also clear that he threads bits of secular beats throughout his music.

"I don't listen to secular music, but if you work at a job that plays a radio or jump in car with a radio, you're going to hear music," Newsome said. "You're going to hear sounds that are very intriguing and influential in how it makes you feel."

According to Newsome, the lyrics in genres such as rock and hip-hop may not have value, but the genres' instrumentals have the ability to evoke emotion. This is a concept he takes seriously in his music, along with maintaining a clear message of salvation.

"When I set out to make an album, I don't set out to make a good gospel album," he said. "I set out to make good music with very strong spiritual lyrics. I'll always be very spiritually inclined, but I want my instrumentation to be very intriguing."

Another trace evident in Newsome's work is his ability to write songs about his own life.

"I haven't always been saved, haven't always been a Christian, haven't always done the right thing," he said. "But if I can share my story with you, it'll help you get through your problems because you've seen me come out better on the other end." - COASTAL COURIER; ANDREA WASHINGTON, STAFF WRITER

"NEWSOME CONCERT A HIT"

Newsome concert a hit

Terry Newsome (holding towel) with his band and background singers during the song "Gotta B U."
From those in jeans and T-shirts to those wearing Sunday's best, a crowd numbering close to 700 packed into the main sanctuary of Live Oak Church of God in Hinesville for Terry Newsome's concert last Saturday.

Although the free concert was part of Newsome's upcoming album and DVD, the gospel singer warned concert goers that the show was about more than music.

"You didn't come here to be entertained," he told the crowd. "You need a breakthrough in your life."

Newsome started the show with his rousing anthem "When U Praiz," which set the tone for crowd involvement the entire night.

"More than half the audience was singing the songs," Newsome said after the concert.

According to Newsome, the surprise of the night was the response the audience gave to the song "Gotta B U." The singer said he had been criticized for the song because of its hard rock edge, but it was clear none of those people were in the crowd.

"That's when people actually came to the altar," Newsome said. "I was very shocked."

Between those going to the altar and the others standing with tears in their eyes, the singer actually began to cry himself during the performance.

"Every time I see someone going through what I've been through I feel for them," Newsome said. "I've been where those broken people have been before."

Newsome added that the whole experience was flattering to him because he is not a Kirk Franklin or Fred Hammond, internationally known gospel artists.

"It was just Terry Newsome," he said. "It proves it doesn't take a big name to draw people."

While Newsome admits organizing the concert, mostly by himself, was a stressful learning experience, due to feedback after the show he is planning for another performance in Savannah.

"We've got something here that may be bigger than I thought it would be," he said.

Newsome's next album is slated to be released on Nov. 15 and will include pieces recorded during the concert and remixes. The concert DVD is planned for a mid-December release.
