Artist Statement - Alex Munson

I like to feel one with the crowd. I’ve created something they can connect to. I need this to feel alive. My worst fear is having someone bored at my show.

I love the creative process when a new song is coming together and starts to feel like a hit. I know the crowd will enjoy it when I can't stop playing it myself. It moves. It shakes me. It's not boring. It's catchy yet original. I write fast songs and try to make them evolve. I love using chords from other keys to sound original to the listener’s ear. I was taught guitar licks from 90s songs by a buddy of mine taking lessons. From there I started using tabs online (dial-up, bleh) to learn basic chords and used that to write my first song. Our band doesn’t practice much. Around four times a year to flesh out new songs. This has always helped the live shows to be fresh for the crowd by them being fresh for us. Our joy is infectious.

I want my work to have powerful insight but try to deliver it in a humorous way. I begin a piece by fleshing out a new set of chords on the guitar and then sing nonsensical words over it as loud and bellow-y as I can. Truth is in the scream. I’ll yell lyrics at you and you can scream them back and together we can just release any and all tension we had from the day, week, month, year.

Phonetics are important to me in music, so the word said has to physically sound interesting while still delivering a message. Eventually the ‘word noises’ I make turn into similar sounding words that fit my narrative. When a song starts to sound like a hit I feel an internal rush and start repeating it over and over, louder each time. It's so gratifying. When people hear my music, I'd like them to think and laugh and just appreciate the moment they are in. Often, they're around friends and I like when they look around and think "...good times". I want my songs to be catchy and exciting. You can dance hard to them or they may induce epic beer pong matches. When at a show or putting on my album I want people to just have fun and forget about their accounting job or their electricity bill.
