Hailing from four different corners of the U.S., John Ryan, Ian Pollack, Andrew Haas, and Josh Jones represent a blend of different cultures and backgrounds, so when they decided to form a band in early 2007, originality was their focal point. Even their group name, That iSH and the Abby, is so intriguingly unique, that one can barely muster a guess toward their sound or style. However, it is their inventive compositions that truly break barriers, crafting musical and lyrical ideas comparable to few, yet accessible and enjoyable to all.

Though That iSH had only been playing together for a few short months, Spring of 2007 saw the band collaborating on a remarkable amount of original material, and their extraordinary work ethic and early demos gained them a small measure of notoriety among the young Berklee community. Their first performance together was at the Berklee Cafe and drew 45 curious spectators, and sparked the band’s strong reputation for live performance.

For the summer, the group broadened their fan base by performing at some of Los Angeles’ most prestigious and historic clubs, including the Whiskey a Go-Go and the Roxy Theatre, electrifying crowds of up to 100 each night. Constantly distributing free demo CDs, That iSH not only saw people responding to their music, but coming back for more, often attending every concert. When the band returned to Boston for the 2007-2008 school year, they were welcomed with a triumphant homecoming concert at Wheelock College on September 13, where students from Wheelock, Berklee, Northeastern, BU, and more gathered to watch the group’s passionate performance.

This Tuesday, October 23, playing to a crowd of 165 people at the nearly sold-out Paradise Lounge, That iSH brandished their latest refrains with a spellbinding performance nobody in the audience will soon forget. The band later donated their proceeds from the night’s concert to the Children’s Miracle Network, an organization devoted to supporting children’s hospitals throughout the U.S. Despite their rapid success, the band remains focused on their future. Working tirelessly on their latest recordings, which include the track ‘Sunshine,’ engineered in one of George Massenburg’s latest prestigious clinics at Berklee, all four members of That iSH and the Abby agree that this is just the beginning.
