"music review: The Blue Dolphins"

Summer isn’t quite over. Sure, once Labor Day rolls around, it’s the unofficial end and you’re thinking about cardigans and changing leaves. Listen to this sunny, uplifting pop duo– perfect for driving around with your windows rolled down or dancing barefoot in wet grass. The Blue Dolphins is two-time Grammy Award winner engineer Alfonso Rodenas and Victoria Scott. The two met at rock pit The Cat Club on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles and started playing and recording together in 2010. Scott grew up outside of London where she learned to play the recorder, piano, and guitar and taught herself to sing by age 12 emulating the varied styles of Carole King, Nina Simone, N’Dea Davenport and Aretha Franklin. From Spain, Rodenas played bass in indie pop-rock band Vitamin Vil, and has since worked as a freelance producer, recording, and mixing engineer in Los Angeles, California. -

Bio

The Blue Dolphins are a Los Angeles-based collaborative duo, singer/songwriter Victoria Scott and four-time Grammy Award-winning producer/engineer Alfonso Rodenas. Their unique Folk, Pop and Roots Rock style with its beautiful melodies, harmonies and uplifting positive vibe has a timeless quality and laid-back charm.

Victoria Scott grew up outside of London, England, and fascinated by her father's record collection of Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Little Richard and Rolling Stones, was inspired to learn to play the recorder, piano and guitar. By the age of 12, she had taught herself to sing, emulating Carole King, Nina Simone, N'Dea Davenport and Aretha Franklin. Alfonso Rodenas is a four-time Grammy Award-winning sound engineer from Spain. A founding member of indie Pop Rock band Vitamin Vil in Valencia, Spain, Rodenas' musical career spans 25 years, and since 2010, he’s worked primarily as a freelance producer, recording and mixing engineer in Los Angeles. Victoria and Alfonso fatefully met at the legendary The Cat Club on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood and soon started playing and recording together.

The Blue Dolphin’s critically acclaimed debut album, My Favorite Word Is Today (2012) is a soulful acoustic blend of Indie, Folk, Rock and Bossa Nova. The album’s stripped- down production and emotionally honest vocals in their follow-up EP, In Between (2013), departs from their acoustic genesis to investigate a new, amplified musical landscape. In May of 2015, the band released a second EP, Walking in the Sun, an advance sample of their full-length album, Come On!, released in September of 2015. In these releases, songwriting is richer and more varied, departing from the pared-down acoustic arrangements and songs that characterized their early recordings.

The Blue Dolphins have garnered extensive airplay throughout 2019 - 2022 on Bob Goodman's show Whole Nuther Thing on Los Angeles radio station 88.5 FM and are included on NPR’s Byron Gonzalez's, Best of LatinX playlist. The duo has released a succession of singles throughout their collaboration, and in October 2021, a new album, Invincible, expresses the duo’s latest vibrant collaboration of musical creativity. The Blue Dolphins tour and perform live in the US, UK, Spain and Mexico.
