The Chance Brothers Band

The Chance Brothers Band

The Chance Brothers Band: Open, honest, traditional rural music from the heart of the country. Bob Wills to Jason Isbell, with a contemporary slant. Singer-Songwriter Bruce Coe draws from a host of resources to give the CBB a flavor and style that includes folk, western swing and cowbilly. Unique and listenable, the music is tethered to a succinct lyrical content that spans a humorous look at meat-market bars in "Take Over the Payments" to the be-here-now tone of "Welcome to Your Destination."

Biography

Bruce Coe (SlightChance) and Rob Witte (SlimChance) met early in this century as members of the renowned Eastern Washington cowboy/country band, The Outriders. Upon the death of Bruce's songwriting partner Tony Reed, the Outriders broke up and after a hiatus of several years Bruce and Rob got together again with the idea of bringing the diverse musical backgrounds they both enjoyed into one project, The Chance Brothers Band.

The two have been working for the last two years on exactly that concept, with the idea that music constrained by the number of players is simpler and more effective.  Roots matter, and it doesn't make any difference where the music ends up, it all starts in the country or on the streets.

The Chance Brothers Band performs regularly as a duet but can expand as needed to include percussion and drums. Festival appearances include the Yakima Folklife Festival, The Skewered Apple BBQ Festival and numerous 'around the town" venues in Central Washington including venues in Wenatchee, Cashmere, Ellensburg, Leavenworth, among others.

If My Heart Was a Machine

Written By: Bruce Coe

IF MY HEART WAS A MACHINE

IF MY HEART WAS A MACHINE
I’D KEEP IF FULL OF LOVE, TICKING ON PREDICTABLY
AND IF IT WAS UP TO ME
I’D KEEP IT RUNNING STRONG, RUNNING COOL, RUNNING CLEAN

BUT I’VE PUT SOME MILES ON THE OLE BOY RECENTLY
BROKE DOWN, BROKE UP ALMOST CONSTANTLY
IF MY HEART WAS A MACHINE, IT WOULDN’T BREAK
BUT IT AIN’T

IF MY HEART WAS LIKE A SAFE
I’D LOCK IT TIGHT KEEP THE OUTLAWS AWAY
BUT THE KEYS I WOULD NOT HIDE
FROM SOMEONE WHO I COULD TRUST
WITH ALL THE WONDER KEPT INSIDE

BUT YOU KEEP ON BREAKING IN EVERY DAY
YOU ROB THE BANK, KILL THE GUARDS, GET AWAY
IF MY HEART WAS LIKE A SAFE
I’D LOCK YOU OUT
BUT IT AIN’T

AND IF MY LIFE WAS LIKE A BOOK
I’D CLOSE THE COVER NOW, NEVER TAKE ANOTHER LOOK
I’D STOP LOVIN YOU, AND THEN
I’D NEVER HAVE TO MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES AGAIN

BUT THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN THE HISTORY
OF A LOVE THAT DIED AND A LOVE THAT SET ME FREE
IF MY HEART WAS A MACHINE, IT WOULDN’T BREAK
BUT IT AIN’T

Runnin

Written By: Bruce Coe

RUNNIN

I’VE HAD MORE THAN MOST MEN HAD
HAD A LOTTA GOOD AND A LOTTA BAD
HAD A LOTTA SHORT AND A LOTTA LONG
DONE A LOTTA RIGHT AND I DONE SOME WRONG

SO WHEN IT CAME TO SETTLIN DOWN
CAN’T SAY MY SHADOW’S COOLED A LOT OF GROUND
I GUESS IT’S JUST BEEN EASIER TO GO
THAN TO STICK AROUND FOR THE END OF THE SHOW

THAT’S ME I’M RUNNIN, RUNNIN, RUNNIN,
RUNNIN - RUNNIN AWAY.

IT AIN’T BECAUSE I HAVEN’T CARED
BOUT ALL THE FRIENDS AND THE TIMES WE SHARED
THE GOOD TIMES OR THE BAD TIMES, EITHER WAY
TO ME, TOMORROW’S JUST ANOTHER DAY

SO WHEN I MEET A WOMAN LIKE YOU
EVERYTHING ABOUT ME WANTS TO SAY ADIEU
GET TO PUTTIN TRACKS DOWN MY OWN HIGHWAY
IF I LOOK BACK, I’M AFRAID JUST MIGHT STAY

YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE RUNNIN, RUNNIN, RUNNIN,
SEEMS LIKE I’M ALWAYS RUNNIN AWAY

SOLOS
BR:

SOMEHOW THIS RUNNIN JUST GOT TO BE A WAY OF LIFE
CUTS ME DEEP BOTH WAYS MY OWN KNIFE

SO GIRL I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT’S TRUE
IT’LL GO BETTER IF I LEAVE IT UP TO YOU
I LOVE YOU, IF I GO I’LL SURELY DIE
I LOVE YOU IF I STAY, IT’S JUST A LIE

AND I’LL STILL BE RUNNING, RUNNING, RUNNING,
RUNNING LONG RUNNING STRONG, ALWAYS RUNNIN AWAY

INSIDE I’M ALWAYS RUNNING AWAY

Take Over the Payments

Written By: Bruce Coe

TAKE OVER THE PAYMENTS

I SEE YOU LOOKIN’ AT THE GIRL OVER THERE
YOU GOT THAT LIGHT IN YOUR EYES
YOU THINK YOU’LL TRY HER ON
TRY HER ON FOR SIZE
BUT LET ME TELL YOU BROTHER
JUST LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE THERE’S A CATCH
YOU GOT A BIG BIG LOVE
BUT YOU BETTER HAVE A WALLET TO MATCH

SHE LIKES THOSE SHINY THINGS THAT COST A LOT
SHE BETTER BE ARRIVING LIVE AND LOOKING HOT
SO BEFORE YOU JUMP
LET ME MAKE THIS STATEMENT
IF YOU WANT THE GIRL
YOU GOTTA TAKE OVER THE PAYMENTS

SHE GOT THE GUCCI HANDBAGS
DIAMOND COLLARS FOR THE DOG
SHE’S A SIGHT TO SEE
SHE’S A REGULAR WALKING COCO CHANEL CATALOGUE
SHE GOT SILVER ON HER SADDLES
4 HORSES AND A FEATHERLIGHT TRAILER
AND BOY IF YOU AIN’T GOT THE CASH
YOU AIN’T GONNA CARRY HER

YOUR BADK POCKET GONNA SPRING A PERMANENT LEAK
CAUSE THAT GIRL HAS GOT TO LOOK UNIQUE
SO I’LL TELL YOU NOW
I KNOW THE ARRANGEMENT
IF YOU WANT THE GIRL
YOU GOTTA TAKE OVER THE PAYMENTS

OHHH 5K, 10K, 15K TWENTY
OHHHH BUDDY WHERE YOU THINK YOU GONNA FIND THAT MONEY

DINER’S CLUB, MASTERCARD, COLD CASH OR VISA
IS THE ONLY WAY YOU EVER GONNA PLEASE HER

CAUSE I’M BROKE

Welcome To Your Destination

Written By: Bruce Coe

WELCOME TO YOUR DESTINATION

YOU RIDE AROUND IN A FANCY CAR
PRETEND THAT YOU'RE RICHER THAN YOU ARE
YOU ARE NO MORE THAN YOUR LAST SENSATION
WELCOME TO YOUR DESTINATION

YOU THINK THAT YOU GOT LOTS OF FRIENDS
INSIDE YOU KNOW WHERE FRIENDSHIP ENDS
SO WHAT IN THEW HELL ARE YOU GONNA DO
WHEN SOMEONE PULLS THE PLUG ON YOU?

EVERYTHING YOU
KNOW COMES UNGLUED
WELCOME TO YOUR DESTINATION

YOU BUY YOUR BEAUTY IN A JAR
LAYER IT ON LIKE MAGIC TAR
YOUR LIFE IS YOUR PHONE AND YOUR LAST FLIRTATION
WELL WELCOME TO YOUR DESTINATION

YOU THROW YOUR SELF AT ANY MAN WHO CALLS
YOU SHATTER WHEN YOU HIT THE WALL
HOOKIN UP MIGHT BE JUST FINE
BUT EVERY HOOK'S GOT A LOTTA LINE

AND SINKER TOO
SO, WHO ARE YOU?
WELCOME TO YOUR DESTINATION

SO YOU STARED AT THE SUN AND HOWLED AT THE MOON
WENT ON TOO LONG AND YOU’VE QUIT TOO SOON
YOU ARE YOUR LOVE AND YOUR LACERATION
WELCOME TO YOUR DESTINATION.

AND YOU TOOK IF FAST AND YOU TOOK IT SLOW
YOU WONDER HOW YOU GOT HERE BUT I BET YOU KNOW
IF TOMORROW YOU WOKE UP AS CLAY
YOU'LL BE NO MORE THAN YOU ARE TODAY, DON'T WORRY

FLY AWAY
FLY AWAY
WELCOME TO YOUR DESTINATION

Baby Doll

Written By: Bruce Coe

BABY DOLL
ARE YOU STILL MY BABY DOLL
OR DON’T YOU LOVE YOUR DADDY AT ALL
ARE YOU STILL MY SUGAR PIE
OR ARE YOU GONNA KISS YOUR DADDY GOODBYE

THAT LITTLE GIRL DIDN’T MEAN NOTHING TO ME
SHE WAS JUST ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY
I LOVE YOU NOW AND I LOVED YOU THEN
SWEAR I’M NEVER EVER GONNA DO IT AGAIN

ARE YOU STILL MY SUGAR PLUM
OR IS YOUR DADDY OUT ON THE BUM
*******************************************************
NOW WHAT ABOUT ALL THIS FORGIVE AND FORGET
DID YOU FORGIVE YOUR BABY YET
YOU KNOW I’M GONNA DIE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE
WHATEVER IN THE WORLD CAN YOU BE THINKING OF

NOW A MAN’S GOTTA HAVE A LITTLE ROOM TO MOVE
CAN’T BE GETTING STUCK ON THE SAME OLD GROOVE
SAME OL’ GROOVE NO GOOD NO DOUBT
NOW ARE YOU REALLY GONNA TURN YOUR DADDY OUT?
NOW IS YOU IS WILL YOU WON’T
WHY DOES YOU DID AND WHY DON’T YOU WON’T

NOW YOU’RE THE ONE I’M LIVIN FOR
PLEASE DON’T SHOW ME THE BACK OF YOUR DOOR
NOW ARE YOU STILL MY HONEY BUN
ARE YOU GONNA BE MY ONLY ONE
NOW I’M THE BEST FRIEND YOU EVER HAD
DON’T’ GO RUNNING OFF HURT AND MAD
NOW IS YOU IS WILL YOU WON’T
WHY DOES YOU DID AND WHY DON’T YOU WON’T

NOW ARE YOU STILL MY BABY DOLL
OR DON’T YOU LOVE YOUR DADDY AT ALL.

COUNTING THE TIME I SPENT WITH YOU

Written By: Bruce Coe

Tonight I'm alone and my cell is my bed
And two are the lovers who dance in my head
And three are the lovers that never should be
And before I can rest I will have my reprieve

Five are the fingers I place on my gun
Six lovely messengers ready to run
Seven is the first empty chamber now
And I hate the silence I have made with my vow

Nine are the lives of a cat spent and dead
Ten fingers to shelter my eyes from the red
I can't count the tears there's no numbers for pain
This moment I'll live again and again

And I've run out if time and I've run out of ways
To count how I'll love you the rest of my days
Forever is the time I will spend loving you
And short is the time now........short is the time

Five steps up the gallows and I'll soon fill that hole
Four words to the padre “God save my soul”
Three men on that platform soon to be two
And dancing the rope alone I will offer my due

Oh this life is a strong one and we are built fine
We will shake in the wind, we will fall off the vine
Dance with the breeze till the ground breaks our fall
Then find our salvation or find nothing at all
