The Great Sadness
“The Great Sadness” EP
Self Released

This five song EP is one of the best things I’ve heard lately! Introducing The Great Sadness from the magical land of Los Angeles, fronted by singer/guitarist Cathy Cooper with her partner in doomy noise Stephen McNeely beating the shit outta the drums. These cats have the blue and these five songs are infectious. Their debut EP is full of what I can only explain as the spiritual channeling of lovely sparse witchy delta blues meets dark folk music that at times reminds me of The Gun Club but yet manages to stand on it’s own two feet. The Great Sadness are on a musical island all their own and that’s a brave place to be. These cats are filling a much needed void and from what I can tell are tapping into the ether and transmitting back some ancient blue from all of us to get down with. It’s a noble job and they do it well.

You need this EP, so give em your money here.

Very excited for a full length player from these folks!

They start a Europe tour in May so check their internets for those dates soon! - BUDDYHEAD

"Pick of the Week The Great Sadness Reviewed by BillyGoat (Editor-in-Chief)"

Are you ready for some new music? We’re always introducing you to new stuff, I know, but when you do, you know it’s gonna be good. Paul Rote just brought this one to my attention. Hyperbole is simply not sufficient as a linguistic tool to describe how utterly fucking cool this 5-track debut is by The Great Sadness. In the space of a minute, Los Angeles singer/guitarist Cathy Cooper can take the sparse, doomy lyrics of a track like “Broken” and sing it with the the subtlety of the great delta blues singers and then spit out ferocious declarations of fire. She’s joined by drummer Stephen McNeely, who does a fantastic job of supporting Cathy and keeping her in the forefront.
‘The Great Sadness’ (2015) is not simply a charming novelty or an overly-hyped “hot new underground release!” This, I believe, has all the makings an American rock classic. Yeah, I know what I said earlier about hyperbole, so tell you what…why don’t you give 'The Great Sadness’ (2015) a spin and see if you’re won over by this 5-track gem.
I’m not a betting man, but I’m placing bets on this one because odds are strong that The Great Sadness within a year are going to be a much better known band and may even catch some notice from the mainstream. It is clear that The Great Sadness thake their craft seriously and treat their material with great respect, and this, ultimately, is why I’ve chosen them as our Pick of the Week - DOOMED & STONED
