Bio
The Hellfire Club originally formed in the 1990s and includes members from a number
of Glasgow’s seminal indie groups such as Big Burd, Kite Monster and The Wow Kafe.
For a number of years the band gigged around the west of Scotland's country and
western circuit, promoting their own brand of 'old'/'hard' country, but their desire to
develop and perform their own songs soon led to a move back to the alternative gig
circuit. In the last few years they have played various venues around Scotland and have
also hosted their own Americana themed night at the Griffin bar in Glasgow. Guest
performers at this event have included Monica Queen, Roy Møller, Warren McIntyre and
Stevie Jackson.
Over time the band has grown from a four-piece to an eight-piece, with their line-up now
comprising Bob Anderson on drums, Rab Armour on guitars and vocals, Helen Brown on
vocals, Willie Brown on guitars and vocals, Mark Ferrari on bass guitar and vocals,
Kenny Irvine on piano and organ, and Ivan Marples on sax.
The band’s last album ‘Songs for Fallen Stars’ represents a distillation of the band's
various influences, and in the true spirit of country music even the album's up- tempo
songs belie a darker lyric contained within. It was recorded and produced by Johnny
Smillie at La Chunky Studios in Glasgow. The Hellfire Club are currently working on a
follow-up.
In the summer of 2017 the band played a sell out gig at the Troubadour in London. A
review of the gig can be found here: https://americana-uk.com/the-hellfire-club-the-
troubadour-london-20th-july-2017. On 5th October last year the band headlined at the
Hug and Pint as part of the Glasgow Americana festival.
