"Best Phoenix Concerts This Weekend"

The Joeys
Sunday, June 13
The Rebel Lounge, 2303 East Indian School Road, 602-296-7013
To anyone who grew up in an era when there was no shortage of guitar-slinging heroes, it gladdens the heart to see a band like The Joeys find a new means of expression in a form as old and marginalized as rock ’n’ roll seems these days.

Teenaged guitarist Dean Cheney knows rockabilly isn’t exactly on everyone’s speed dial, but he is undeterred. And The Joeys play rockabilly with a fervor that you makes you remember rock was once the music of the young made for the young. Cheney’s love of rock legends extends to having an orange Gretsch just like Eddie Cochran and singing into the retro ribbon mics Elvis Presley used to leer into.

But make no mistake, Cheney, drummer Hayden Lamm, and bassist Luci Cormany – all of whom are School of Rock alumni – aren’t a novelty act. Cheney’s ease around the fretboard would make James Burton proud. And the rhythm section is so on the money that it’s hard to believe they didn’t even know what rockabilly was a few years ago. They’ve got a new music video out (for their track “Planet Z”) and will perform on Sunday at The Rebel Lounge. Locals Blu Joy, The Reztones, and Gnarwhal Jrz open the 7 p.m. show. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Serene Dominic - Phoenix New Times

"EP Review "Punk from Outer Space""

The future of the roots rock revival is in good hands with the young local rockers most likely to show up to practice in a Stray Cats T-Shirt. Led by Dean Cheney, the Joeys recently released a new concept EP. "Punks from Outer Space." After setting the tone with a spooky instrumental called "T Minus Zero" they salute Chuck Berry on a track that swaggers like an old Dave Edmunds record before tossing bits of "Rock Around the Clock" and "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On" into the reckless rockabilly of "Black Leather Jacket (Blue Suede Shoes)" and singing with the organ-driven title track. - Ed Masley - Arizona Republic

"5 Rowdy New Tracks You Should Hear"

“Phantom Bride of 13 Curves” - The Joeys

This band of youngsters from Scottsdale have a frisky rockabilly sound and knack for storytelling – both of which can be heard on their new single. “Phantom Bride of 13 Curves” recounts the tale of a Woman in White that purportedly haunts a stretch of road in Syracuse, New York. The rousing rendition of the urban legend mixes up rowdy and retro for a crowd-pleasing number. The Joeys are a promising musical act on the rise right here in town so make sure you know their name – and check out their music… - YabYum Music and Arts

The Joeys Fuse Retro Rock With Modern Pomp and Flare

In a time and space where rock music is settling for a more subtle and cerebral future, The Joeys are reminding lifelong listeners about its rich heritage, creating a full throttle live rock & roll throw back sound with a modern flare that few young bands are able to achieve.

Originating from Phoenix, AZ, The Joeys display a mastery of both traditional and modern rock styles with their shape-shifting sonic framework, alternating from punk rock to roots, rockabilly and blues. Comprised of Dean Cheney (Guitar/Vocals), Luci Cormany (Bass/Vocals) and Hayden Lamm (Drums), their sound is enmeshed in a world of variety, their strength lies in their diverse production styles, and with each release there exists an aura of innovativeness.

Since bursting onto the scene in 2019 with the gripping “Phantom Bride of 13 Curves”, they have been able to demonstrate their deep appreciation and understanding of rock history with each release by lacing cinematic story-telling with a thrilling blend of bold studio captured live energy.

In 2020 they released their debut EP “Punks From Outer Space” showcasing growth in terms of their storytelling and production styles. There’s a lot of frenzy and ecstasy sprinkled all over the EP with even more live energy prowess and more urgent songwriting; Dean Cheney's vocals draw the listener in from the start of each track with the band pushing their chemistry to new heights and solidifying The Joeys' trademark sound. The record is filled with truly electrifying tunes.

An early career-affirming moment for The Joeys was in late 2019 when they won Alice Cooper’s Proof is in the Pudding competition. As a result, the band played an opening slot to a sold out Celebrity Theater during Cooper’s Christmas Show. Along with playing several other festivals (including; 2020 AZ Rockabilly Bash, 2019 Lake Havasu Rockabilly Reunion, 2018 Mesa Music Festival, 2018 Phoenix Comic Fest) The Joeys’ music has also been featured on the nationally syndicated Rockabilly & Blues Radio Hour.

Their latest single, “Dangerous Dreams” is a straight forward rocker about the adrenaline rush of living dangerously. Drawing inspiration from 80s British rockers like Billy Idol and the Cult, it's another genre-defying step forward for a band to watch, with no limits to how far they can push their momentum and grow their fanbase.
