The Kelly Line
Ones to keep an eye on as the year progresses, The Kelly Line have a number of songs that are set to be released over the coming months. 'Sure As Hell Not Through' is the first of them, an optimistic and upbeat indie track that makes you turn up the volume more and more as it goes on.
"Sure As Hell Not Through is first and foremost a defiant song", say the band. "Although it was written a while back it seems entirely appropriate for the current context. It’s an optimistic song. There comes a time when the fires that burned so brightly within begin to flicker and fade. Maybe we learn to live with injustice and acknowledge our fate and place in the pecking order, accepting that great things don’t happen to people like us. This song is a reminder that we don’t have to, that we’re not through yet and we don’t have to just wait for shit to happen to us – the best way to defend is to attack."
We're certainly going to need optimism in the current climate, and this song will bring a little of that into your life. Well worth a listen whilst you're in and around the house. The Kelly Line have more in stock, so be sure to keep your ears peeled in the future. - Up To Eleven
The Kelly Line are a father/son songwriting duo with the ability to write stunning stripped back, acoustic music with a twist. ‘I Never Promised You Flowers’ is an acoustic number with social commentary of politics thrown in the mix. Showcasing their folk-punk side to the acoustic duo, the song is in context with the recent political history of both the UK and the US. The band stated, “With new promises made and broken almost daily amidst a world in crisis, we set about writing and recording ‘Flowers’ in order to make sense of what we were seeing”.
A 4 and a half minute wonder of pure honesty, ‘I Never Promised You Flowers’ guides through a turbulent time with ease. It feels like the kind of song that can gear you up, but at the same time, reassure you that things will be ok in the end. The Kelly Line reminisce the 60s and the present day in the single with a nostalgic presence soaring throughout. Father and son are split between Cheltenham and Cardiff, whereas the other members of the band come from Bewdley and Wales. A versatile outfit showcasing emotive lyrics with a passionate arrangement, check out ‘I Never Promised You Flowers’ is you’re into Frank Turner and Flogging Molly to name a few. - Slap Magazine
A boisterous count in sees the day’s programme take a slight change of tempo as The Kelly Line launch purposefully into their set. Though normally existing as a duo comprise of father Mike and his son Ben, its just the latter who appears on stage with a bandmate on harmonica. Seemingly there’s a stylistic tinge of 90s U.S punk but, in that they are delivered via acoustic guitar and some charmingly jaunty harmonica breaks, they’re given a pleasant twist. The world-weary sentiments of ‘Blind Obedience’ and ‘Hamster’s Wheel’ – which previously sat a little askew on Ben’s young shoulders – are provided a more accepting context when his father is revealed as the group’s lyricist. - The Fix

Bio
The
Kelly Line is a father/son songwriting duo - Mike (father) and Ben
(son) write the songs which Ben performs, either as a solo acoustic act
or as part of a full band. The sound ranges from stripped back acoustic music in the vein of Bob Dylan, to driven Folk-Punk reminiscent of Frank Turner.
People often ask us how it works - writing songs with your dad/son.
To
be honest, we don’t really think of it like that. We’re just
songwriting partners who enjoy sharing a beer - which Mike (Dad) always
buys!
The
original concept was to see what kind of music just the two of us could
make together, but has since evolved to include fellow musicians
performing in a wide range of styles.
The Kelly Line can be
traced back to Connemara where, way back in 1897, Albert Kelly was born.
A few years later, while no more than a boy, he ran away to sea. He had
many fantastic adventures before finally settling in Liverpool and
raising a family. We’re his blood line and we’re just continuing the
story.
