""The Lagoons - Hypocrisy" - Blog Feature"

Electronic duo The Lagoons recently released their sophomore EP Hypocrisy in November. Driven by their jazz background, The Lagoons fuse elements of jazz with electronic pop, sharing their wonderfully melodic music with the rest of us. The title track is a calming song that has light dance pop elements laced with the gracefulness of jazz, giving the song a beautiful fusion. “Hypocrisy” echoes elements of the 00s when more modern dance electronica started to take place, even reminding me a little bit of Late Night Alumni’s crisp sound. - Abduction Radiation

THE LAGOONS | HYPOCRISY

This was probably my favourite I listened to this week. Love the guitar in this track and the fun synth sounds mixed with a simple beat. It’s not overly complicated and easy to listen to... The intro is a bit of a long one but I could honestly listen to the instrumental version and be happy but when the vocals come in I’m like ‘ohhhhhh yeah… boiiiii’. It has an interesting timbre... I’m definitely keen to hear more from these guys. - Semplesize

Why do we like this?

A laid-back, surf-rock leaning track called "California" may seem easy to write off, but allow me to make a case for The Lagoons. The Austin duo have their roots firmly planted in indie rock, but intrepidly reach outside of the genre to customize their sound.

Venturing everywhere from tranquil synth-pop to indie jazz, The Lagoons keep things consistently fresh. With feel-good melodies and foot-tapping beats, "California" is the perfect soundtrack to a sunny morning. - Indie Shuffle

"Sweet Tooth - THE LAGOONS, “CALIFORNIA” { Summer montage. }"

MEREDITH SCHNEIDER | AUGUST 17, 2016

Do you like smooth jazz? What about indie rock? Well, brothers Joey and Ryan Selan have been creating an extremely intriguing blend of both under the moniker “The Lagoons“. Transplants from California to Texas, these talented musicians – trained in jazz, actually – have found a way to incorporate aspects of both jazz and indie rock, as well as some synth pop to bring us a sound that is uniquely theirs. They have two EPs under their belts since just last year (Check out The Lagoons and Hypocrisy), and we have the debut of their latest track “California” right here.

Starting out with synth that makes you feel starry-eyed, it is quickly follow by the most sultry blend of guitar and percussion you may have ever heard. Slowly, the song incorporates saxophone to exude that smooth jazz vibe that we associate with the duo. The vocals blend into the instrumentals quite well, with words like “I’ve been sipping on some California wine, everything feels fine when I’m with you / I’ve been puffin’ on some California kush, thinkin’ bout my life, how everything revolves around you” bringing the reality that this is a love song to the forefront. We’re big fans.

We’re going to play this on repeat over a montage of our summer now. - Impose

"Premiere: The Lagoons - California"

TAM SACKMAN | JULY 29, 2016

We at ATG are living for the latest influx of jazz hybrids in indie music and beyond. A prime example of said jazz hybrid would be The Lagoons’ latest ode to the Golden State, “California.” The Real-Estate like overt musical chillness is an ideal pair for the subject matter, but the real standout of this track is that pure jazz saxophone. Check it out below.

Here’s what The Lagoons had to say about the new track:

We wanted to embody the care-free feeling of driving in a convertible along the golden coast. We also wanted to embrace some of the finest qualities the Golden State has to offer. We hope this song uplifts you to your own happy place, where ever that may be. - All Things Go

Bio

Seamlessly blending soul, jazz, synth-pop, and rock, The Lagoons combine simplistic harmonious beats with infectious melodies to create chill, groovy music. Originally from Los Angeles, California and based in Austin, Texas, brothers Joey Selan (keys, vocals, saxophone, producer) and Ryan Selan (guitar, vocals, drums, producer) grew up writing music together, officially forming The Lagoons in 2015.

Growing up as trained jazz musicians with the music library of predominantly classic rock and jazz, The Lagoons strive to create a chill electronic-pop sound with the underlying tones of jazz, rock, and funk. Working together with the well-renowned studio engineer Dave Collins, The Lagoons have released two self-record EPs thus far – a self-titled EP released June 2015 and a sophomore EP entitled Hypocrisy released November 2015.

The duo’s signature sound of a jazz and soul synthesis — slick, easy — comes from their third studio EP Gems, which is slated to be released Fall 2016. The Selan brothers currently perform around Texas as a 2-man show, creating a unique live electronic performance with influences such as Daft Punk, Cherub, Chromeo, Tycho, The xx, Gorillaz, Steely Dan, Rufus du Sol, Dave Matthews Band, Classixx, Phoenix, Alt-J, and Zero 7.
