“To those familiar with this city, South Philadelphia has forever been the central hub for all things loud, fast and sonically destructive. But sometimes, from under the wreckage of broken cymbals and detuned guitars emerges something considerably more tame and distinct. The Naked Sun, a self-proclaimed “honest rock” quartet from the bottom end of the city, offer tender love songs that effectively transcend the idea of “honesty.” Their sound is nothing short of vulnerable.” – WXPN’s the Key - WXPN's The Key

These seven tunes really capture the heartfelt nature of The Naked Sun’s performances. The fleeting moments where a vocal doesn’t quite reach the pitch as planned or a solo has a bum note only serve to make these recordings better – and so genuine. Like Neil Young and Crazy Horse, they fully understand that all the studio perfection in the world can’t replace capturing that feeling of passion that all musicians should feel whenever they play. For those who like Americana sounds without too much sheen, this release is essential listening. - Real Gone

With a deep understanding of feelings and a openness to emotions, The Naked Sun more or less lives up to their name. They are entirely open as they sing of love, loss, and heartache. Overall upbeat, this album brings a degree of vibrancy to one's day as it brings us to the roots of rock. The vocal harmonies are high quality, the instrumental intertwining is robust, and the lyrics are superb. There really isn't a lot to dislike about this album, yet it somehow gets stronger the longer you listen. Take in these songs as you drive down I-81 or as you relax on the Hillel porch with an evening scoop of Sweet Things. - Washington an Lee University Radio (WLUR 91.5 FM)

Andrew Wesley Harris has a lot to say about his band’s debut album, so we’re going to let him take the wheel and do most of the talking here. The most important thing to keep in mind when listening to the The Naked Sun is that sincerity reigns supreme: The self-proclaimed ‘honest rock’ seven-piece from Philadelphia put their heart into everything they do, whether it be a dynamic anthem a lovelorn ballad, or anything in-between.

The Naked Sun’s infectious blend of roots and folk-influenced rock is on full display on their debut album War with Shadows, a record that dwells in raw self-awareness and basks in moments full of hope and possibility. Harris and co embrace both light and dark, painting vivid portrayals of some of life’s many powerful moments. Bio

The Naked Sun may or may not have coined the phrase, but “honest rock” has unquestionably been their ethos since their start back in 2011—and few bands embody its spirit like they do. With songs that echo the rawness and sincerity of the cities around which its members grew up—Detroit, Baltimore, Philadelphia—the band blends the basics of roots rock and folk with layers of bolstering piano and organ, intricate pedal steel leads, and melodic choruses backed by satisfying vocal harmonies. Rooted in the songwriting of frontman Andrew Wesley Harris, The Naked Sun strive equally toward Petty’s pop genius, Springsteen’s storytelling, Dylan’s social consciousness, and the energy of My Morning Jacket.
