Biography

The Random Concept was formed in Western Connecticut in 1965. The group was part of the NYC music scene in the late 1960's, when it lived and rehearsed at the now infamous Hotel Albert in Greenwich Village. Three of the original members, Gary Higgins, Dave Beaujon and Terry Fenton, remain. Dave VandeBogart, the fourth member of the current lineup, has been with the group since 1981.

The group has always had a unique sound, ranging from driving electronic instrumentation, to what now is described as Psych-Folk, to points in between. The early work of the band centered on improvisation, and in this context they came to the attention of Andy Warhol, who had them practice at his NYC studio, The Factory during the mid 1960s. The outcome of this experiment, was them improvising, while Vogue model Donyale Luna read aloud from the newspaper. It didn't catch on, but during this period they performed in well known clubs, such as Cheetah, the Night Owl, Max's Kansas City, Electric Circus and Joel Heller's 8th Wonder. The bands focus on improvisation had the somewhat unfortunate effect of creating unique rock pieces, most of which occurred in magical moments that were never caught on tape. It's a great regret to all involved.

Each member of the current lineup has been involved with their own recording projects as well, often with the help of the other members. Dave VandeBogart (Lead Guitar/Vocals), has recorded 2 solo CDs, the first self titled and the current one entitled: Drink Like A Chimney, Smoke Like A Fish. Dave Beaujon (Bass/Vocals) and Terry Fenton (Keyboards/Vocals) together produced their own CD entitled (DNR) under the name of Sportswear . Gary Higgins (Drums/Vocals) has released a number of solo projects on Drag City Records, some of which include contributions from other members of the Random Concept (Red HashSeconds) and his newest, A Dream A While Back.

The Random Concept has toured throughout the US and Canada including a showcase at the 2008 SXSW Music Festival in Austin TX, sponsored by WFMU in Jersey City, NJ.
