Bio

The Reflection, formerly known as Smoov Ras & The Reflection, is a reggae/hip hop four-piece in Lafayette, Louisiana. The new brand is focused on expanding their original message of peace, equality, and consciousness to greater heights.

After a few years of independent growth, they have regrouped to translate their deepened personal experiences into energetic blues rhythms and smooth genre-leaping songwriting styles. Smoov Ras has always strived for a connection with his listeners “We want people to feel our energy in this new album! The pain, the happiness, the seriousness, the memories, all of which are being shown. We want more than a sale. We want people to experience the song through their own setting”.

Reformed in 2020, The Reflection has signified their return with a new album, titled SYNS, scheduled to be released this fall.  The new single Louisiana Boy is available now and offers an introduction to their blend of reggae, rock, hip hop, zydeco, pop and more.

Originally formed in 2015, Smoov Ras & The Reflection was composed of Smoov Ras (vocals, drums), Chad Fouquier (guitar, bass), Josh Lazo (keys, sax), Denise Gobert(keys, vocals). Their debut album Son of Calypso was written during Smoov Ras’s, aka Josh Martin,  time and stint with the U.S Army. Smoov was moved by all of the experiences he shared. “The good, bad, and the ganja” served as the main source of inspiration for this mixed-emotional album. Smoov shares, “This project was an act of inner battles that I was facing at the time. Yes, it references marijuana quite a lot. That’s not the main importance of my work. I want you to understand the issues with what’s going on in current events, and how it compares to past times.”

Son of Calypso was released in 2015 and produced by good friend and band member Chad Fouquier of Maison Fou Records, which is an independent label. The reception caught the attention of local festivals and notable venues including Festival International de Louisiane, the largest international music and arts festival in the United States, in 2016 and 2017. The band expanded their vision to venues in their hometown like Blue Moon Saloon and beyond to Hi Ho Lounge and House of Blues in New Orleans.

During a brief intermission, The Reflection decided to regroup after finding their own independent power and come back full force with a new album, one for the books.

“Fans can expect very intimate and spiritual performances. Cool sounds, live instrumentation and a positive group of reflective people are other things you can expect.” - Smoov Ras, lead singer

Although their live gigs have been halted due to a global pandemic, The Reflection is working hard behind the scenes getting ready to debut their new image with new videos, photos, and a new album to be released later this year. Listeners of The Reflection can expect a blend of their South Louisiana roots in “Louisiana Boy” and the addition of different styles in their forthcoming album. The group is eager to share their new sound with old fans and new!
