"Everybody was floored by Regrettes—the new poster children for local teen garage rock. Formerly known as Pretty Little Demons, and comprised of Marlhy Murphy (drums/vocals) and Lydia Night (guitar/vocals), the power pop two-piece had such a rounded and self-possessed sound that I didn’t even miss the bass. Their clean 3 or 4 chord doo-wop ditties gave a genuine expression of young ennui that you can dance to. They had a magnetism that brought the bar to life. Nobody in that room was expecting anything out of that first act. It was a lethargic Monday, even among artsy burnouts with no 9-to-5 gigs, and on a school night these girls rocked an L.A. staple. Think Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains but not as agro. And to give an idea of just how young, Lydia is celebrating her 15th birthday at The Smell next Saturday, Oct. 17th, along with the release of their new EP recorded with Matt Adams (Blank Tapes), and their upcoming U.K. shows with Jack Off Jill. When I was in middle school, I wasn’t cool enough to go to Lollapalooza. Openers Pretty Little Demons, on the other hand, played it last year. Lydia Night and Marlhy Murphy may be 14 and 12 respectively, but the duo rocked with a ferocity and penchant for hooks that schools most indie rockers twice their age. It was a Girl Power kind of night Thursday at the Echo, where Kate Nash delivered a ferocious headlining set that ended with stage-crashers thrashing away up front while the crowd did likewise. The 28-year-old performed songs from all three of her albums, including “Foundations,” “Mouthwash” and “Pumpkin Soup” from her 2007 debut and “Death Proof,” “OMYGOD!” and “Fri-End?” from her punk-rock 2013 album “Girl Talk.” She also did “Girl Gang,” her remake of the FIDLAR song “Cocaine.” Slutever preceded Nash at the sold-out show, and the night began with the first show by Lydia Night and Marlhy Murphy (fka Pretty Little Demons) as Regrettes. Much love to Ohio's Tweens, but a new band more closely belonging to that demographic has fully arrived. Pretty Little Demons are Lydia Night — who, okay, at 13 has technically crossed over to the teens — and Marhly Murphy, who's 11. The Los Angeles two-piece, both alumni of the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp, already played last year's South By Southwest, and they're booked for Lollapalooza this summer. Late last month, the two shared a music video that recently caught our eye via the blog for Bradford Cox-scored film Teenage, and it's beyond "precocious."

Twin Peaks' "Log Lady" character returns, the Kills' Alison Mosshart plays a scientist, and then there are Night and Murphy in the classic TV show's "Red Room," perfoming the yowling garage-rock of "Unknown Species." Directed by Morgan Higby Night, the clip shows Pretty Little Demons are already adept students of Jack White-style rock'n'roll, and Jemina Pearl's teenage band Be Your Own Pet also comes to mind. But there's enough grit and charisma here to suggest the best is yet to come. In the meantime, the audience for the new Twin Peaks box set could be bigger and younger than David Lynch might imagine. SXSW: Ryan Gosling's Connection to Pretty Little Demons, Fest's Youngest-Ever Group

The actor says 12-year-old Santa Monica native Lydia Night, who also plays in his band, "makes you feel like you wasted your childhood being boring and uncreative."

"At the time, I really didn't know that he was like, huge," shrugs 12-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist Lydia Night about performing onstage alongside Ryan Gosling. "Then I kept seeing his name on billboards, and I was like: 'Oh, that's Ryan Gosling? OK.' " Since early 2010, Night, who lives in Santa Monica, has performed with Gosling's indie rock outfit Dead Man's Bones -- asked to join after she appeared in the band's "Pa Pa Power" video.

In July, Night formed Pretty Little Demons with 9-year-old drumming prodigy Marlhy Murphy, whom she met at the Burbank School of Rock. After raising $5,000 on the funding site Kickstarter, they recorded their debut EP, Flowers, with producer Ethan Allen (The Cult, Gram Rabbit). On March 12, they will perform at SXSW at Austin's Dirty Dog Bar -- the youngest band ever invited to play the music fest. Night's father, Morgan Higby Night, said when his daughter heard the news, "she actually used a curse word. It's rare that happens."

Night, whose sound is upbeat pop punk, cites Amanda Palmer, Regina Spektor and Karen O as inspirations. "We write songs about really strong subjects, and it can get really personal," she says. For example, "Bag of Rock" covers the topic of drug addiction. "We had been talking about addiction in school," says Night, "but also my grandparents were addicts, so it's close to my heart."

Night admires Gosling because "he knows how to play so many different instruments -- ones I don't even know the names of." As for the Oscar nominee, he says of the preteen, "She's the kind of kid who makes you feel like you wasted your childhood being boring and uncreative." - Hollywood Reporter

Just like the Log Lady introductions that were filmed and directed by David Lynch for the 1993 Twin Peaks rerun on Bravo, Catherine E. Coulson provides the intro for Unknown Species. You can read her entire monologue below. The Twin Peaks inspired music video was written, directed, produced and edited by Morgan Higby Night. “The girls learned the song backwards and are playing it backwards in The Black Lodge to be true to how David Lynch filmed it,” the director and father to Lydia tells Welcome to Twin Peaks. “Twin Peaks is my daughter’s second favorite show. Buffy is the first.”
Other interesting trivia: Syd Lynch, granddaughter of David Lynch, did the make-up for the video, and The Kills singer Alison Mosshart stars as “Dr. Palmer”.
