Triggerfish wasn’t a household name around town even during its short tenure as a local band, but it was a pretty decent pop-rock outfit on its own. "Everything old, is new again” in the music industry and this couldn’t be more true for songwriter Rick Hack now in his 40s, who is experiencing a career renaissance. Rick wrote and performed the songs used in this 90s inspired feature soundtrack when he was in his 20s while playing with his band “the Tinbenders” over 15 years ago. He has played with may notables like “Hootie and the Blowfish” and bands like the “Tonics” and sold many records. His tunes were favorites in the south east markets getting heavy airplay and he had a growing legion of fans. Sometimes, things don’t go as planned, they just get better.
Fast forward to the upcoming concert reunion with the “Tinbenders” who will return to play for their hometown at the Rosewood Crawfish Festival and to perform with EVERCLEAR on May 3rd. Rick has also just signed with publishing company Red Queen Music, the contemporary division and label connected to one of the biggest songwriters in history – Harry Warren whose hits span the decades of the American Songbook from “I Love My Baby” to “42nd Street” to “The Atchison Topeka and the Santa Fe, “At Last” and “I Only Have Eyes for You”.
Rick writes and performs his own songs and he says he has “more stories to tell now that he is in his 40’s” while JP Riva, the grandson of Harry Warren of Red Queen says that “when songs are authentic and can connect with an audience, that’s all that matters.’ Rick joins a unique collection of collaborative artists at Red Queen, and says ‘It’s exciting to finally get the support of a publishing company who believes in me and with the film release, it allows me to share my songs with more people”. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland Rick Hack got his start in music at the age of 5 years old when he sang at his aunt’s house in front of her fireplace. Even at that age, he realized, from the reaction of his family, he could carry a tune. It must have been in his DNA as his grandmother used to sing on the radio and at family reunions in 3-part harmonies. But it wasn’t until high school when performed in his high school musical Damn Yankees and received overwhelming feedback that he realized he had the sound and charisma to do something more with music.
Rick soon moved to Columbia, South Carolina for college and it was in this music hotbed where he saw an ad in a weekly mag for a lead singer in a rock band and Rick joined The Tinbenders. Rick toured with them as the front man for over four years opening for staples including Hootie and The Blowfish, Modern English, Big Wreck, Tonic, Edwin McCain, Drivin' and Cryin', Athenaeum, the Root Doctors, and Cowboy Mouth. Anyone who experienced The Tinbenders, live "first noticed the strong voice and great stage presence of lead singer Rick Hack." Hack is also credited with excellent song writing and lyrical abilities. The City of Columbia Action Council credits the band with drawing the largest crowd in the history of the annual "Summer Concert Series." With their debut CD “What About Now” complete, The Tinbenders were taking their project to a new level. Two weeks prior to the release, WARQ 93.5 FM put "What About Now" into regular rotation, and the week of the CD release, WNOK 104.7 FM put "Out Loud" in rotation. The fan base expanded, and the buzz was spreading, not just in the Carolinas, but nationally.
Rick had success touring with Tinbenders, but soon the other members of the band desired to pursue other avenues and the band unraveled. Rick decided to leave South Carolina to venture to the west coast and he ended up performing on his own and expanding his talent by playing guitar and becoming a singer/songwriter. It was in Los Angeles he landed music placements in the Tribeca Film FOR ELLEN starring Paul Dano and John Heder. And this year, three of his songs appeared in the film SISTER starring Barbara Hershey and Reed Scott. Following this momentum, he then was discovered by a publisher/label to release his music. Rick joined forces with guitarist/signer John Thomas Griffith - Cowboy Mouth and The Red Rockers, bassist Marcus Blake of The Rollins Band and drummer Matt Tecu of Jakob Dylan's band. They make it their mission to dedicate themselves to produce the sounds of yesterday with a modern edge. Rick continues to perform with high caliber artists including HAIM, Freedy Johnston, The White Buffalo, Big Country and has graced the stages of major venues including House of Blues, The Viper Room, Key Club, The Mint and Saint Rocke, The Knitting Factory, and can even be seen in intimate settings including Hotel Cafe. Rick knows his sound isn't something completely new, but promises you will be singing one of his songs the first time you hear it.
