Chris Compton & the Ruby Brunettes
Woodshed Sessions: Volume 1

The Ruby Brunettes are a bunch of nerds. Their hobbies include cycling, home brewing, reading science fiction and cultivating chili peppers. They are two Leos and two Geminis. They are a nurse practitioner and three environmentalist and they play modern acoustic music that fuses different elements of American roots music styles. Rich vocal harmonies and mellow brass over bass-driven island beats evoke sunny California acoustic rock with a touch of blues stomp from the piney woods of the deep south.     The current line up formed in the Spring of 2013 and in that short time the band has performed at numerous festivals, museums, galleries, radio stations, churches and bars throughout North and South Carolina. In a grassroots effort to bring their music to an even broader audience the band will often busk on the streets of the capitol city during special events.    Singer/guitarist Chris Compton received runner up in the "Best Local Songwriter" category of the "Free Times: Best of Columbia" in 2013 and was described as the "grand master of songwriting on the Columbia music scene."  He feels funny about getting all the attention so he wants you to know how great the rest of the band is: Catherine Allgrim sings lead and harmony vocals and plays full-bodied bass trombone with big band flair; Ken Mixon also sings harmony while laying down the rhythm on cajon, djembe and a deadly arsenal of other tiny percussion in his bandolier; and Chris Paget sneaks in a four part harmony whenever he can and is really the driving force on upright, acoustic and electric bass.

The group released their debut album in early 2013, before the addition of a rhythm section, and received tremendous reviews with Jasper magazine saying this self-titled sticks out in a major way among music released in Columbia this year. The Ruby Brunettes recently released an EP with bass and drum recorded locally at the Woodshed Archive as part of the "livish" series.
