4/5 stars.
Sleepin' Rough comes as album number three from Sydney Celtic punks The Rumjacks, and one thing that is immediately obvious is that the group aren't attempting to break new ground — they have simply tried harder to merge the hyper-energetic frenzy of their live shows with a folk-rock aesthetic.
The record's rhythm remains firmly rooted in punk, leaving vocalist Frankie McLaughlin to string together his best tales of love lost and street battles under an acoustic heart. A Fistful O' Roses, The Pot & Kettle and Les Darcy all delivering the finest and most infectious songs we've heard from the raucous five. - TheMusic.com.au
The Rumjacks
As the first day of the festival came to a close, The Rumjacks were the last act I heard, and as we passed their stage on our way out I noticed couples jive dancing to their rock & roll, and just short of midnight the singer engaged his audience with: "we need your help to end this night, so why don't you all get up and fuckin' dance!" What a perfect up-beat way to end day one of Bluesfest! - Scenestr
If you’re having problems getting moving this Monday, crank up “A Fistful O’ Roses” by Sydney powerhouse The Rumjacks. Unless you’re at work, or you have sensitive ears, because there’s a little adult language involved!
Cursing aside, this is one of the most exciting, high energy songs I’ve heard in some time. It never takes its foot off the pedal as it takes aim at Sydney’s lock-out laws. I also love the way The Rumjacks intertwine their punk sensibilities with their Irish and Scottish roots.
The song comes from The Rumjacks’ upcoming album Sleepin’ Rough, which hits stores on August 5. The band is currently touring around Europe and the United Kingdom, but they’ll be back to promote the album later this year. If you’re abroad, here are the places you can catch them. - Sounds Of Oz
