When you hear The Shakes 'Caught Up' from their debut EP for the first
time, an upbeat nostalgia puts you back in a simpler time of longboards
and flannels. Tossing between a driving chorus and boppy verse, the
track's bitter-sweet induces a kind of 'de ja vu' for anyone that grew
up with The Strokes or the Stones. Pretty much a garage-punk wolf in
classic-rock clothing - the band's about as tight as a nun's napoli,
seeming more concerned with leaving time, rather than filling in and
over-complicating the formula. Marry that with the raw vocals of a nasty
sheriff, and you got a fireball tune that's drunk and horny and ready
for peer-pressure. If this is the first track you've heard, then you're
probably seduced by their flirty-friday vibe. But heed this warning.
They are best served on stage, and can eerily delve into much darker
blasphemy. If you havn't seen The Shakes live, then you probably
haven't seen Iggy Pop stagger onto the Black Pearl mid-storm either.
