Bio
Sterling Powers (aka Sterling Andrews, though Powers is her birth name) spent nearly a decade as a music photographer before her background as a trained vocalist pushed her into performing. Her time was split between shooting portraits for artists such as Robin Thicke, Ryan Seacrest, Silversun Pickups, and Thrice -- and singing background vocals for groups as diverse as electro-dance act Love Grenades, the shoegazey Suki Ewars, and the psych-folk getup Eagle Winged Palace. In 2013, she released a collection of her own work under the name "The Tennessee Walker: " five loop-based folk songs entitled Horses in the Snow.
The Tennessee Walkers sound draws from Old Hollywood musicals and deep-rooted folk music but fully embraces present synthetic and futurist textures. The sound has been described as Oingo Boingo fronted by the Andrews Sisters, Annie Lennox backed by the Decemberists, and a sort of burlesque Beck.
For her debut EP, Powers was joined by Nick South (Donovan, Robert Palmer), Jim Putnam and Ethan Walter (Radar Brothers), Matt Mayhall (Spain), Nathan Van Hala (West Indian Girl, Fur Traders) and Andrew Lynch (Landy, Earlimart, Andrew Lynch).
