"Aktivist "Strange Girls Don't Cry" album review 5 out of 5 stars"

English translation:

Every time I think that rock ‘n’ roll has died and has been rotting 6 feet under the surface of the earth, I get awaken by a slap on my cheek. The new record by “The Vandelles”¬¬—which feels like a charming slap on the cheek from your girlfriend when you show up drunk at her door at 5AM — makes me want to get up and run around screaming, “Wake up, people!” I think it was only an unfortunate accident that their debut album hadn’t become more popular. The “Strange Girls Don’t Cry” reveals a completely new, uncompromised, and at the same time, the most endearing side of the Brooklyn band. Equally perfect sounds and melodies from a relatively inexperienced band, are really hard to come by nowadays. Girls don’t cry and they take us on a trip with an overt self-confidence, gracefully dancing along the swaying walls made of guitars, with killer top-riffs, and romantic sleepy melodies seemingly straight from the “cheesy” top 40. There is no doubt/discussion about the form and the substance of this album. You either get onboard, or you sip your cocktail, looking out as the adventure disappears with the sunset. You can dance to this album; you can have sex, or do drugs, or even cry. And I still press a “repeat” while quietly whistling the closing riff of “Nocturnal”. - Michal Kropinski

"Harvard Crimson | Beat of the Bay: The Vandelles"

It’s rare these days for a relatively unheralded warm-up act to blow you away, but that’s just the experience I had two months ago at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. I was there to see shoegaze behemoths The Jesus and Mary Chain, now aging and creatively exhausted like most ‘80s post-punk groups, though still apt to put on a great show. As I waited outside the club in the cold to show my ticket, I could hear coming from deep inside a loud, trembling wall of noise, interspersed with a deceptively delicate vocal performance. It was instantly compelling. It sounded like shoegaze, but it sure as hell wasn’t the Mary Chain. “Who’s that?” I asked the bouncer. “That’s the Vandelles,” he said.

I’ve now seen the Vandelles twice, at the Paradise and then a couple of weeks ago at the Deep Heaven Now festival in Somerville. Despite hailing from Brooklyn, they are regular fixtures on the Boston music scene and occupy a fascinating niche in the broad alternative-rock genre. Shoegaze as a genre too often seems to be in its twilight, the gorgeous soundscapes of the Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride having been superseded by epigones like Slowdive and Chapterhouse. Contemporary indie bands such as The Pains of Being Pure At Heart seem to labor all too dutifully under the burden of maintaining the ‘80s shoegaze legacy—the Williamsburg economy sustains itself mostly on reverb pedals—but the Vandelles are the first group I’ve heard who genuinely seem to be developing the form, pushing the boundaries, and making something new.

“You can go in so many directions,” says Honey Valentine, the band’s drummer, emphasizing the irreverent and at times playful approach the Vandelles take to their work. Valentine is the beating heart of the group’s sound, taking a central, propulsive role. Sometimes her drumbeats seem vaguely militaristic, at other times almost tribal.

The Vandelles as a whole dabble in other styles besides shoegaze. The guitar riffs are firmly rooted in surf rock, and lead singer and guitarist Jason Schwartz also cites psychedelic groups the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Black Angels as key influences. You can hear this in their music: it’s a kind of wispy, ethereal quality that’s hugely pronounced in concert. For example, on “I’m Way Ahead Of You,” airy harmonies float menacingly over a droning guitar, fusing together these disparate sounds to create something impressively distinctive.

The group’s show at P.A.’s Lounge for DHN was especially satisfying, with a more languid, laid-back vibe than that regularly produced by the occasionally sterile patronage at the Paradise. The Vandelles definitely operate best in an intimate setting; despite their shoegaze roots their music is playful rather than aggressive. P.A.’s was an excellent showcase for the group’s strengths: Schwartz’s charismatic vocal performance, a relentless rhythm section led by bassist Lindsey Ann, and a strong propensity for good, old-fashioned noise. This was exemplified in their single “Lovely Weather,” which is built on a delicious old-school riff, Valentine’s aggressive drum attack, and layers upon layers of feedback.

The Vandelles are currently on tour, but they should be back in Boston soon. “We have a lot of friends here,” Schwartz says. When they do, they’ll be well worth catching. Too much alternative rock today operates under the shadow of its illustrious ancestors; it’s refreshing to encounter a band that aspires to carve out its own tradition.

"WARNING: Strobe lights in use. May cause seizures." Austin Psych Fest II Review"

I love this band more than any other psych band right here and right now!
Beach Party movie on LSD.
A tree grows in Brooklyn shaped like an amalgamation of the African Baobob and a Mandrake root and it is The Vandelles.
This is the only band I know who can send sensitive emo types plugging their ears and screaming for mercy to stop the white noise in every direction.
Furthermore, there was a sign posted outside of the Radio Room that read “WARNING: Strobe lights in use. May cause seizures” but no warning that read “The Vandelles in use. May cause aural orgasms”. They are the loudest band since My Bloody Valentine and so energetic I felt like I was jumping on a big ol’ trampoline their entire set.
I don’t take photos of live bands much anymore because I feel like if you’ve seen one guy with a guitar, you’ve seen them all. “And besides”, I often say to myself as I walk away from the stage after the third song trying to tuck away my shame as the chump with a camera, “it’s not like they are gonna light their shit on fire”. So what do The Vandelles go an do? LIGHT THEIR SHIT ON FIRE! The Vandelles apologized to the audience for not having their first full length limited release CD “Del Black Aloha” not ready in time for Psych Fest. I was one of the first to receive it and it has not left my CD player since. - Victoria Renard, Portable Shrines

"Bruce Ashley's video for Psych Rockers The Vandelles' "Lovely Weather""

Bruce Ashley and detox.tv have brought the snarl of Bogart back to life in this gritty neo-noir short for The Vandelles' single "Lovely Weather." Ashley's body of work includes music videos for Girls' "Lust For Life," the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On," and Pearl Jam's "Jeremy." The Vandelles have made their own unique contribution to the bustling East Coast psych-pop scene over the past five years, supporting acts such as The Warlocks, A Place To Bury Strangers, and The Black Angels. "Lovely Weather" is off of their 2010 full-length, Del Black Aloha. The band is already at work recording their follow-up album which blends the optimism of Beach Boys' harmonies with haunting rhythms and dream-like foreboding, marking a major step forward in the band's evolving style.

See the video for "Lovely Weather" here, and download it here.

The Vandelles are rock n’ roll noir at its finest. Their songs are the perfect soundtrack to rain-slicked city streets at night, and the lust, betrayal and violence that filters through them. The band thrives on layers of fuzz and a wall of reverb-laden guitar noise, and they also harbor a penchant for 60s garage pop melody and surf rock riffs. Those expecting the Vandelles to sound like their Brooklyn contemporaries Vivian Girls or Crystal Stilts would be wrong—they channel a dirtier, scuzzier aesthetic more on par with the Cramps, Suicide, X, or even Link Wray. On the new release, Del Black Aloha, songs like “Lovely Weather” and “Dash N’ Dive” find the band’s ragged riffs, crooned vocals and crushing, dread-inducing pedal manipulations forming a perfectly sinister sound that both terrifies and transfixes the listener. Definitely not recommended for those who suffer from anxiety, late-night panic attacks, or criminal thoughts. - Bill Dvorak

--That Surfin' Spirit - Vandelles open for surf sultan Dick Dale--
-Stephen Bove - Asbury Park Press-
Surf-rock reverb roars straight into Asbury Park tonight when "King of Surf Guitar" Dick Dale joins Debora Dynamite and the Torpedos and the Vandelles at Asbury Lanes.

Last seen at the venue in January opening for surf-punk pioneers Agent Orange, the New York City-based "pulp-beat noir 'n' roll" outfit the Vandelles say it has been a near-surreal experience to perform alongside figures of such surf-shredder royalty.

"(Dale) is The Beatles and the (Rolling) Stones to us; a very large part of why we do what we do," said guitarist Dave Herbert. "We have many varied influences, some of whom we've been fortunate enough to play with, but none of them were close to the figure that Dick Dale is. He was an original; it's like being able to play with Buddy Holly or Elvis (Presley).

"It's extremely intimidating trying to do justice to the sound with him standing a few feet away," he added. "But I just hope he enjoys the ways we incorporate the sounds he pioneered into something we hope can be called an original."

Though many independent artists strive to defy genre classification, Herbert said members of the Vandelles have no problem with the "surf-rock" label — or any other for that matter — if it benefits fans in the long run.

"(Labels) usually give the listener something to grasp onto. We've been called everything from surf revivalist, shoegaze, noise-pop, psychedelic. None of those would necessarily be inaccurate," Herbert said.

"When other groups say that they don't want to or can't be categorized, usually it's just a cop-out," added guitarist and singer Jason Schwartz. "The (Rolling) Stones, Beatles, (the Jesus and) Mary Chain and the Beach Boys were all able to encompass a variety of styles within their catalog and yet still retain the essence of their sound. With us, it's pretty straightforward — we've found something new out of experimenting with old sounds."

This experimentation has come to include a cinematic, pulp-noir edge often incorporated into the Vandelles' stage show.

"Back when we were first starting out, we were all big fans of old Westerns and spy-type films and, of course, the scores to these films heavily influenced our sound. For our own amusement, we would hook the films up to a projector, blow it up onto our living room wall, put the films on mute and play to what was going on in the movie, sort of provide our own live score."

--NXNE Live: The Vandelles --
-SoundProof Magazine-
If you're into fuzzed-out pyschedelia, The Silver Dollar was the place to be for one of NXNE's best shows. Enter The Vandelles, New York's astral visionaries blasted out a sonic wall of sound Jesus And Mary Chain-style, a stunning cacophony of noise that would make Kevin Shields proud.

Led by the shade-wearing Jason Schwartz, The Vandelles turned a half-filled venue into a scorching drone-fest led by dancing vibemaster/promoter Dan Burke. Amazing how this modest-looking four-piece can unleash such hypnotic ferocity — pounding drumming assaults, whirlwind guitar distortion and ethereal vocals that rival bands such as Singapore Sling and The Raveonettes. I felt like I was getting a glimpse of a tripped-out shoe gazer band from the early '90s — Creation Records footage coming to life in front of me.

The Silver Dollar crowd was fixated by the band's dynamic energy, dissonant eruption of guitars with a twinge of slick '50s rebelliousness, the smell of leather jackets and motorcycle diesel in the air. The timing of The Vandelles' NXNE appearance couldn't have been better as Toronto is experiencing a mini-resurgence of psych-drone bands (Love Kills, Action Makes).

So let this be a warning; bands that mix free-wheeling danger and seductive layers of noise may be around the corner. With an incredibly positive response and a ringing endorsement by Davy Love of The Magnificent Sevens label, The Vandelles made a great first impression. Get out the lava lamps and incense. Tune in. Trip out.

U.K. label Northern Star Records is hoping to expose worldwide listeners to a host of up-and-coming psychedelic rock acts via the compilation "Psychedelica: Volume One," which was released internationally in late March. A North American release is pending, while a second collection is due in December.

The two-disc, 33-track set runs the gamut from pioneers such as the Silver Apples and the Electric Prunes to more established acts such as the Brian Jonestown Massacre and rising stars like the Lovetones, the High Dials and the Black Angels.

"None of these bands sound anything like each other, yet they're classed as psychedelia," says Northern Star co-founder Scott Causer. "The psychedelic genre has developed in all sorts of different directions and is very diverse." Causer and partner Andy Oliver appear on the album with their own bands, the Electric Mainline and Spacegarden, respectively.

"We noticed that on MySpace, bands are altering their profile genres to include 'psychedelic' as their primary genre and now we are receiving CDs from more mainstream indie bands who have exclusively recorded psychedelic tracks especially to appear on our album," Oliver says.

Though unique in its own right, the new brand of authentic vintage rock would have fit right in 35 years ago. The Brian Jonestown Massacre sprung from the Byrds and Jefferson Airplane, while the Doors and Velvet Underground inspired the emerging Black Angels. Acts like the Vandelles keep one foot in pre-psychedelic surf rock while remaining true to the shoegazer movement of the 1990s.

"I think psychedelia has always been there, but it has been prominent twice before and now it's returning to prominence for the third time," Causer says. "I couldn't begin to describe the journey, as psychedelia is a journey within itself. It'll go where it goes."

Interested parties can purchase the compilation from the label's Web site; an MP3 version of the project is also in the works.

Vandelles Win Round 2 Of Zig-Zag Live

New York natives the Vandelles are the winner of the second round of Zig-Zag Live, taking home a prize package valued at more than $15,000. The retro rockers are on the heels of a just-released sampler EP, The Vandelles, which features selections from their upcoming self-released album. Their self-described "noir rock" was also featured in Psychedelica Vol: 1, a compilation released by Northern Star in the UK that also featured the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Black Angels.

NYC's The Vandelles release a six track sampler EP...
NYC's The Vandelles release a six track sampler EP of formidable feedback-drenched garage surf this year from their two as yet unreleased albums 'Taste the Barrel' and 'Del Black Aloha'. Their only previous release has been a track on Psychedelica Vol:1, a compilation released by Northern Star Records in the UK last year. Already with an infamous reputation for a storming live set, I've been catching up of late, listening to what they have to offer online.

They've been described before, among other things, as sounding like "The Jesus and Mary Chain meets Jon Spencer meets 60's Garage rock". The track which first jumps out at me is 'Swell to Heaven', instantaneously accessible, with a strong dose of Beach Boys surf influence ala JAMC's Kill Surf City. Other tracks include 'Lovely Weather', a breathy garage track with an uncompromising noise laced riff that hits in after about 30 seconds and doesn't let go until the end, and 'Fever of The Beat', one which clunks through its rhythm like an uncompromising juggernaut, while 'Dead Wave' rounds off the material online, another breathy number over a heavy noise laced lampoon that sounds strikingly close to some early JAMC track I can't quite put my finger on (Inside Me?).

It's difficult to gauge them on just a few tracks, but it seems to me that although they’ve a sound which runs retro to their influences, and quite convincingly so, there’s a bit more to it than that. While we get surf rock laced with noise on the surface, upbeat on the surface "turn me on and over and over again/when i get up on this vinyl vixen/shell twist and shell turn/till she gets me down again", sonically it (almost) always seems to have a dark outlook engulfing it - I've read it described before as evoking a sonic escapade akin to the resurrection of gritty western characters back to shoot out and reclaim their town with a vengeance - and while that may be quite a theatrical way to put it, there are truths there, and it’s delivered with all the right ingredients to keep one hooked.

They play a number of dates at SXSW this March, details to which be found from their myspace, where the sampler EP can also be purchased (along with t-shirts). I'll be keen to see them follow suit and get those unreleased albums out too. Awesome band.

From the entrancing echo and drone of the Vandelles' songs - which recall the late 80s grind of Jesus & Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine - you'd suspect the Manhattan crew may have broken into some rusted-out 19th-century foundry to record them.

On the contrary, no coal-fired furnaces were employed by the Vandelles, who actually travelled hundreds of miles away from Gotham's hubbub to put down their tracks in bucolic upstate New York, right there in the forest among the deer and rabbits.

"Our guitarist (Jason Schwartz) has an aunt who works at a camp for the performing arts," explains Vandelles frontman Dave Herbert. "They had this big room that wasn't being used, so we set up there and put down tracks whenever we felt like it. Of course, we did a lot of summer camp stuff, too you know, swimming, hiking in the woods, and I think some s'mores might've been made."

The Vandelles also managed to bank enough material for two albums and possibly even a single for Davy Love's Magnificent Sevens label. But they also had to pay for their keep by putting on camp concerts, and those eight- and nine-year-olds can make for a tough audience.

"I'm pretty sure the kind of stuff we do isn't what those kids were used to hearing. But at least they were attentive.

"Being performing arts students, they were probably a lot more open-minded than your average teenager. I think it was a good experience for everyone involved. I know we had a great time."

The Vandelles haven't yet deciding on a label but they haven't yet ruled out working with Davy Lee's Magnificent Sevens.

The Vandelles

About a ye...
october 3rd 2007

The Vandelles

About a year ago I wrote about seeing The Vandelles at Beg Yr Pardon #9 and said that they: "take things upward and outward along the lines of Man or Astroman? mixed with Happy Mondays". At the time I was sold on the band's live performance, but truthfully a bit skeptical because it's "not cool" to enjoy it when a band projects images behind them as they play. Right? Oh please. Each time I talk about a band doing just that (inevitably) the person I'm talking to communicates some representation of a roll of their eyes. Be it through a sigh, some monkey-like movement of their hands, plain old body language, or an actual rolling of their eyes. Inevitable I tell you.

Well, here I am to set the record straight once and for all (having now had ample time to decide where I stand on the projected imagery behind a band thing): I love it. Always have. It adds a welcome visual element to a live performance. For certain bands, especially those of a darker ilk, it truly enhances the concert experience. Anyway, given that I haven't seen The Vandelles in such a long time (and thus am not sure if this is even an ongoing "thing" for them), let's move on. But I liked it when they did it. A lot.

So, I was incorrect in half of my comparison before. The Vandelles certainly do have a touch of whatever inspired Man or Astroman?, but their sound hits closer to The Jesus and Mary Chain than it does Happy Mondays. Certainly they have a roaring surf vibe that they then combine with a JAMC/MBV tidal wave of sound approach. As well, they wear their performance on their sleeve, taking cues from The Velvet Underground and Suicide in this regard. This combination of creative directions results in a rather unique sound bursting with palpable darkness - just what you're looking for around the time of Halloween. I'd reckon The Vandelles to be perfect music for a motorcycle gang of wandering vampires (like those from Near Dark); if this is you, look no further. You have found your theme song(s).

Earlier Review:

"Beg Yr Pardon #9 with The Vandelles, DraculaZombieUSA, and O'Death"

Tiny Masters Of Today were set to be the first band of the evening but had to cancel at the last minute; therefore, DJ sets warmed up the crowd until it was time for The Vandelles to take the stage.

I had no idea what to expect from The Vandelles and I tend to like it that way. Of course I had a few preconceived notions, given that their name sounds like a band out of the '60s and that the music played before they took the stage was, well, mostly '60s dance music. So did they sound like a band from the '60s? Only in terms of wet reverb and vibrato, which is to say they certainly take cues from '60s surf rock (which was reinforced by footage of surfing being projected behind the band as they played). The Vandelles are more than that though. They don't sound strictly surf-revivalist like, say, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet but rather take things upward and outward along the lines of Man or Astroman? mixed with Happy Mondays. One part this, another part that...never tells the whole story. Instead, let me suggest going to see The Vandelles live at one of their upcoming shows if you enjoy dark, moody, noisy, psychedelic surf-rock. Gnarly.

I was thoroughly zoned out when I saw the Vandelles play a Beg Yr Pardon show at the Delancey on Tuesday night, but that may have been the ideal state of mind for their extremely loud but exceptionally tuneful set of arty nihilistic surf rock. They played without any stage lighting; illuminated only by diagonally projected loops of surf films and computerized psychedelic swirls of color that lent their performance both a touch of ironic humor and a bit of menace. Their demeanor fell along the same fine line, alternating between bouts of giggling and joking banter from the girls in the rhythm section, and the unforced intensity of the guitarists, one of whom often had a vaguely unsettling expression of remoteness on his face as he murmured his vocals into his microphone. Bio

Over the course of the past five years or so, The Vandelles have come to command their own corner in the local music scene. They occupy a territory that covers the Pulp-rock stylings of early Jesus and Mary Chain colliding with a sandy island of slinky hula riffs and harmonic dissonance. The bands roots are in New Brunswick, where they formed during their college years, from the members of two separate bands. Soon after, they found themselves playing in Texas with The Black Angels, but have since relocated to Brooklyn. They emote California style to the max, like a beached orphan of X, making their eastern seaboard ties all the more remarkable.

The band features an all-female rhythm section, Lindsey and Honey bash out thunderous riffs while Jasno squeals feed-backing solos, all set to tropical-themed rear projections. They take all of the beach vibes of a Ventures record and run them through a static cracked sound wave, adding a gleaming finish to their vintage approach to both songwriting and sonic allocation. They come on like a hazy dream, full of just the right amount of nostalgia to get the senses up and running.

Their first EP grabbed them an MTV spot, as well as countless live shows, including a pre-SXSW southeast tour with The Warlocks that brought them through seven different states and culminated at the Austin Pych Fest. August 2010 they released their first full length "Del Black Aloha" dubbed "Noir Rock and Roll" with the cult hits Lovely Weather - which was featured on ABC's Body of Proof October 11th 2011 - and Bomb the Surf featured in several films and most recently in EA Games Need for Speed The Run released November 15th 2011.

The Vandelles were a headlining act at Iceland Airwaves 2010 dubbed "the coolest band from America to play the festival". In 2011 they played 2 official showcases at SxSw in support of their "Summer Fling" EP released March 14th 2011. Their sophomore LP titled Strange Girls Don't Cry was released August 6th 2012, and one month later the band found themselves touring with the Jesus and Mary Chain to sold out crowds with both girls singing "Just Like Honey" on different nights of the tour.

In the spring and summer of 2013 The Vandelles toured separately with The Warlocks, The Telescopes, and Ume. In September they decided to take a break from the road to begin work on their third album and followup to Strange Girls, but that break is over now! The Vandelles will tour South America in July 2014 and then head to Europe in the fall before dropping their new yet unnamed album. The sound of this album with be a cross between American Hardcore of the brutal late 80's Seattle scene, the Surf tones and styling of Link Wrey, and the vocal harmonies of Buddy Holly. Think early Raveonettes Meets early Nirvana, and played by Dick Dale.
