The Whales, formed in 1983, call New London, CT their home, though band member reside in Boston, Los Angeles and Connecticut.  The four original members grew up in the same neighborhood in Westerly, RI and have been close friends since 1969 when the youngest member was 2-years-old.  (Bill Dumas replaced drummer Frank Strafach in 1986.)

The Whales have released two albums (Whales Rock and Fishbelly White), a single (Buddy Lover b/w Talk About the Weather), and have appeared on Volumes 1 & 2 of the Towers of New London compilation.  Tracks from an un-released EP (The Dream) can be found in streaming formats.

Their records have received critical acclaim and airplay throughout the United States as well as Canada, France, Germany and the former Czech Republic.

The Whales sound is reminiscent of the folk rock genre of the Sixties but supercharged with the high energy of the 80’s post punk/alternative rock.  Traditional blues has also influenced the band’s instrumental and song-writing styles.  A dash of psychedelia rounds out The Whales sound.

The Whales have performed at a variety of venues from Boston to Washington, DC including The Living Room in Providence , Hank's Cafe, Nightingales and Downtown Beirut in NYC, The Rat in Boston and the El ’n Gee in New London.  They have opened for such artists as Rick Danko, Young Fresh Fellows, Fleshtones, Yorma Kaukonen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, The Reducers and The Outlaws.

During the summer of 2015, The Whales came back together after a long hiatus.  The music and the magic instantly reconnected and now the band is looking forward to live shows and going back into the studio.
