"The WILEY One, Album Review"

The Wiley One
No. 7 Kid

Subject(s):
The Wiley One, No. 7 KidSammy Wiley, a.k.a. The Wiley One, is the brother of Cristiana Cole and Marta Wiley (of local esoteric rock group W.O.M.B.), and judging by his new CD, there's some serious talent in the genes. Wiley's album opens with "Possibilities," an upbeat acoustic song reminiscent of Jack Johnson's work on Brushfire Fairytales, then moves on to bouncy folk-ska with "False Reality." Wiley's guitar-playing harks back to the hard pick-and-pluck style of players like Nick Drake (minus the morose vibes), but all the songs here are driven by springy reggae beats and positive panache. "Open the Lock" sails along on a booming dancehall beat, mixed with rap and oh-oh-ee-oo vocals not unlike those the Police used on "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," while "The Beer Song" displays the kind of funky swagger usually reserved for stumbling downstairs after a Saturday night spent drinking and doing things you don't remember on Sunday morning. Not every track is a standout ("No. 7 Kid" sounds too much like a 311 song), but tunes like "Vampire Scars" — with its lovely, languid synths, breathy vocals, and pulsing beats — more than fill the gaps.

"Bringing Classy Back"

The Wiley One
Bringing Classy Back
Kim Milbrandt

The Wiley One is a blues/hiphop inspired band reigning from Phoenix and keeping gigs alive in New York. The band is multifaceted in the sense that the individual members bring about very interesting influences. Listening to this three-piece, there is a mix of folk from the acoustic and incredibly strong blues influence from the bass lines. The vocals provide that reggae dub feel with a straight lyrical message. The three piece consists of Sammy "Wiley One" (vocals/acoustic), Jay "Of the Funk" (bass) and James "Identity Crisis" (drums).

Sammy Wiley started playing guitar at age nine when his brother gave him a hand-me-down guitar but sites that he "got serious" when he was 14. The first songs Sammy learned to play were Pink Floyd’s "Wish You Were Here" and "Nothing Else Matters" by Metalica. Sammy has definitely come into his own sound since that is reminiscent the feel good beats of Fiction Plane with a finger pick folk twist.

Sammy the Wiley One himself, having went to school for international business at Northern Arizona University definitely hones that global perspective when it comes to being influenced for his music. He sites being influenced by religious figures as well as political figures all the way to Roger Waters and Steve Nash. The band also features personal poetry and writings on their website that give fans that personal connection into what is truly inspiring the artist at that particular moment.

The band has released a full length album titled No. 7 Kid that has gained the band solid local reviews. Sammy Wiley is planning a 15-track follow-up tentatively titled Kill It With Love as well as a personal acoustic album and various artist hip-hop album. Even with all this hard-work and ambition the band has booked more shows in New York than at home in the near future.
