“What’s worse chasing your dream and never get it, or living life and doing nothing with it?” (Young Street)
Somewhere in the midst of our manipulative, money-driven, egotistical society lies truth. Once you find that truth you hold on to it and never let it go. The 2 of Diamonds’ music is bred using that same integrity. Witty, yet realistic, the rap duo aims to satisfy their native city of Chicago, IL by pouring their style on to the streets of every other major city.
“It’s me see, D-K-T, Up in this piece, wit D-M-C, We go all the way back to ’93, like Nelly Saint Lunatics and Murphy Lee” ( D-Rush’s 1st rhyme)
The 2 of diamonds went from elementary rhymes to being able to balance their sense of creativity with a relatively commercial sound. Picture a pair of individuals that were never satisfied with where they were at with their music. Visualize them using every day as a learning experience and portraying that through their lyrics. Now take that and combine it with a little “whatchacallit” and you have The 2 of Diamonds. Why the name? D-Rush and Young Street have always put more thought and effort in their actual music than what to call themselves. The group picked a name as adolescents and stuck with it..
The 2 of Diamonds have been greatly inspired by acts such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, Andre 3000, and Lupe Fiasco. Both Young Street and D-Rush have been recording since the age of 13. The duo met in 1995, and even though they have not always attended the same school, they have been close friends ever since. As adolescents the two originally had plans on forming an R&B group, but their voices began to change along with those plans. Though things fell through, both never lost their passion for music. IT TRULY IS A PASSION. No really, it is. In the year 2000 they decided to transition from R&B to Hip Hop and have never looked back. In 2008, they were featured on the well known mixtape Coast 2 Coast vol. 27, which also had appearances by names such as T.I., Lil Wayne, Lloyd, and many more. They believe the biggest challenge of all will be staying humble. Their definition of it- being more in love with what you do than how you do it.
