Trap, snap and crunk
Beats and meaning in the hip-hop and dance scene | Patrice Woodfork

Augusta’s homegrown
To make it out of an environment like that takes more than just luck and a prayer. It takes dedication and a thirst for success. For T.A.V., which stands for “The Absolute Verbalist,” the studio became his second home, allowing him to vent his frustrations and channel his anger into something positive, namely music.“Raised in the projects, maimed in the process” is how T.A.V. describes growing up in the Garden City on the wrong side of the tracks. Like a boxer on the ropes, he comes back swinging, using his past as motivation to succeed. Through his poetic words, he takes the listener on a journey into understanding. His style evokes memories of the late 2Pac with hints of OutKast, among others. His influences run the gamut from Ludacris to Creed. “Don’t be close mind all your life. Pay attention! Let me broaden your sights, cuz you don’t know what it’s like,” he says in the chorus of “Know What It’s Like.” He grabs the listener with infectious beats and holds them close enough to whisper some reality in their ears. Performing at the James Brown Festival, Big Baller Car Show, Powerfest, Aiken July Fest and May Fest, T.A.V. sharpened his skills and captured converts from the rump-shaking crowd. With an album set to release and an industry showcase at D.Timm’s this winter, T.A.V., as he says, plans to show that he “is a step above and in front the rest.”

Bio

Tavaris Terio Jones,
rap alias T. A. V., was born March 13, 1981 and raised in Augusta, GA. He started rapping when he was 14. Jokes and negativity from certain individuals motivated him to be persistent. “Now I can spit my most venomous lines/ from five up to ten at a time/, potent statements that'll get at ya mind”, quoting a few lines from his Gator produced track, “Now You Know My Name.” T. A. V. started perfecting his free styling skills. Knocking oppositions down as quick as they had come, in neighborhood street battles. Now the best in the area! This young student of hip-hop has seen his share of problems trying to be discovered. From management issues to the blatant ignorance of people trying to ignore pure talent. Born and raised in the G.A. city of Augusta he is a gifted undiscovered MC. Mr. T. A. V. (“The Absolute Verbalist”) plans to show that he is a step above, and in front of the rest. This “I Will Not Lose”attitude will get this young artist where he needs to be. A place where he is noticed and respected. Now T. A. V. sees a new era of his growth in this game, enough of the small street battles and recording songs on four tracks and karaoke machines for friends to hear. He started performing anywhere he could to build up his stage performance. He’s performed at Millenium, 706, Stoppers and many other clubs along the C.S.R.A. He has opened up for James Brown, D4L, T.I., Neo, just to name a few. He has also perfomed in countless Radio One and Clear Channel events. He is now named by Augusta Chronicle and the Augusta Metro, the hottest unsigned artist in Augusta, GA. Now he has something to say not only to his friends and family, but also to the world. Street driven and motivated by his struggle, he plans to touch the head of the youth hip-hop community. “Patience is a virtue” and dues have just about been paid. It's time for the streets to be introduced to one of it's children and newest representatives….................
