"Shoot Around With The ACC"

The art of the posse cut. The crew track. It’s been a hip hop staple since the Juice Crew rocked a Marley Marl symphony in the golden era of rap. And since then it’s been done again and again, sometimes very well and other times not so well.

So what are the ingredients of a good posse cut then? It’s a lot like a relay race. If any runner falls behind or fumbles the pass the race is lost. There needs to be an overall unison amongst the “posse” members as well in terms of style and creativity. And creativity, is exactly what CalRipkin, KevLo, Mahlee and Stef bring to this top-notch underground posse cut from The ACC.

The ACC are a self described collective of 4 hip hop artists hailing from Newport News, VA. And right off the bat they hold no punches with lines like “Feelin’ like freshman on the bench” referencing a famous Hip-Hop mags yearly freshman issue. The 4 rappers swap bars over a soulful choppy beat that any real hip hop fan would acknowledge as a head nodder. I do admit, I’ve heard the sample used here in a beat flipped by Detroit rapper/producer Black Milk (“Try” from his 2008 album: Tronic), but The ACC have an original take on the way it’s chopped up and put back together. And it’s a just a dope sample none the less.

The video that accompanies the song deserves a shout out as well. Complete with a That 70's show style weed circle and Transformers mask, an added level of creative expression is added to an already great song by an engaging video.

Keep a look out for The ACC, and check out their mixtape “Ca$h for Gold” here: http://theacc.bandcamp.com - Kyle1637

"THE ACC - CA$H FOR GOLD (TML SUBMISSION)"

It's crazy how the DMV, one of the locations I respect the most keeps on hitting my inbox with some dope material on a day to day basis. To add the names to the collection is this group "The ACC", their wavy filled sounds definitely caught the attention of my ears. Singles like "Hold Me Down" with the electronic sample was a nice touch and Hawaii Hoes with smooth riding instrumental. It's something that's worth looking at.

"The ACC – Hold Me Down"

Dope new hip hop track on what I believe is a Daft Punk sample? Pretty sick, wasn’t aware you can rap to Daft Punk, but clearly The ACC has done it here….”The ACC is a collective of 4 hip hop artists (CalRipkin, KevLo, Mahlee, Stef) from the city of Newport News, Va. (OH!, thats why they’re called The ACC, I get it)… Everything done creatively from the art work, rhymes, and production solely from the group. We are set to drop our debut project entitled “Cash for Gold” this July, which already happened.” You can even get on there website to check out more of their stuff, it’s all good in the hood. Enjoy! "PROJECT OF THE WEEK"

I'd be remissed if I didn't shout out the homie Ced Hughes (1/2 of YOUDONTSAY!) for putting me on to the recipients of this Week 10's project of the week honors. The ACC. Having come highly recommended by an artist's whose taste I trust I made it my business you check out the group's debut project, Ca$H for Gold. I have made a habit of never having super high expectations when checking out submitted material. Nevertheless, in the back of my mind I'm always hoping the music I check out is genuinely dope. Luckily this was one of those times were the music exceeded my normally mild expectations exponentially.
Hailing from Newport,VA, the four man hip-hop collective consisting of members CalRipkin, Mahlee, KevLo, and $tef have made quite the splash on to the hip-hop scene with their debut mixtape release. Intent on doing their part to revive the infectious combination of dope production and credible lyricism that defined the Golden Age of hip-hop, the crew offers a versatile mix of everything a hip-hop connoisseur craves.
Drawing on a mixed bag of musical influences samples of music from Alicia Keys ("Shine") and Daft Punk ("Hold Me Down") a nice balance of certified bangers and smooth melody-driven cuts can be found on Ca$h For Gold. The tape features guest appearances from vocalists A. Nicole and D. Simmons and rapper Ced Hughes. Expect to hear more from this talented quartet in the near future. For next grab a free download of their fifteen track mixtape, Ca$h For Gold via their Bandcamp page. - Adrian Smith Associate Editor
