The Active Light

In the fall of 2010, Toronto born vocalist Marco Abaya made the journey from Ontario to Calgary, Alberta on the heels of a summer of musical experimentation and discovery. It didn't take much convincing on the part of Thunder Bay, Ontario Lead Guitarist and soundscape visionary Patrick Zelinski that making the move across the country wouldn't bear a fulfilling and music-less fruit. While honing their skills on a multitude of guitars, synths and pedals, finding their musical expression and style was beginning to take shape. Thus began their search to find like minded artists that would share and contribute to their musical vision, mixing synthesis, soul-gripping guitar leads, catchy riffs and smooth vocal melodies that ignites one's musical soul. That same fall in 2010, Nova Scotia born drummer Craig MacPhee came into the fold and the trio began work on their first EP as The Active Light. After the release of their 4 song debut, and a seemingly chance encounter at a music store brought local Calgary bassist Mike Malkin into the fray. These 4 members would continue to refine their abilities on their respective instruments until yet another serendipitous encounter brought the McGill trained classical vocalist and Calgary local Amanda Hillestad into their musical group. Always changing and ever exploring the limits of their musical expression, The Active Light strives to leave a lasting musical imprint on one's mind, body and soul.
