The Adult Bookstore

Three virile young Adelaidian bucks began crafting their own ambitious music early in 1999, when they were far too young to know better, and they sensed that they would forever have something to do on the weekend. Seemingly thousands of weekends later, and an additional, suitably virile member (no pun intended) later, The Adult Bookstore have blossomed into what can safely be termed a band.
& In terms of instrumentation, they are indeed quite a normal band – two guitars, two voices, one bass, and with several cymbals and other drums played by one percussionist (who used to have eight arms but we sliced them off in order to humble him and see drumming from a human’s perspective). In terms of musicianship and songwriting, though, they generally veer off into distinctly odder terrain. General traits running through songs tend to be noisiness, unexpectedly catchy melodies and complex structures. Beyond that, their songs are bound only by their distinct, but never unlistenable, strangeness.
The Adult Bookstore love playing around Adelaide at such scenic locations as The Governor Hindmarsh, Jive, The Grace Emily, The Exeter & The Rhino Room, among others, and in beautiful Melbourne at The Esplanade Hotel, The Green Room and The Commercial Hotel. They have also recently finished an 8-track (eight songs, not using an eight-track) musical recording entitled Beard:Stroker, which was launched in Adelaide at the Lizard Lounge on May 27 of 2005. In addition to this, work is well under way on the next album due out in mid-2006.
Various members of the band have been known to heap praise upon bands such as (and intuitive readers of this biography may see some insight into the Bookstore’s own difficult-to-articulate sound here): Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse, The Dismember -ment Plan, Architecture in Helsinki, Dappled Cities Fly, The Shins, Interpol, Xiu Xiu and other such artists who enjoy melding weirdness to worthiness.
