Bio

In their own words ‘it’s all about the songs.” Timeless songwriting is at the heart of the matter for Melbourne country/soul/pop group The Adventure Spirit.
Originally formed as a home recording project in 2005, the band is now a compelling live act.
Based around the songwriting of its two vocalists, Tim Fry and Leigh Young, The Adventure Spirit traces its influence to songwriters such as Bob Dylan, while taking musical cues from artists like Oscar Peterson and Steve Cropper.
Live performances demonstrate just how diverse the group is. Within a single set the audience will hear delicate ballads, blues driven soul tunes and an assortment of fruity boppers that the band long ago termed ‘shoe-shufflers.’
“Describing our genre is always hard,” remarks double bass player Ben Tansey. “We’ve got bits and pieces of all the music we love in our songs but it all sounds like us. Nothing is out of place.”
Since 2007 The Adventure Spirit has played to a wide range of audiences in Melbourne. 2009 was capped off with a live TV appearance and 2010 opened with a sterling performance at the 2010 St. Kilda Festival.
Connecting with the audience is the most important thing of all according to singer/guitarist Tim Fry: “We’re not caught up in a rock fantasy. You have to give the people a reason to listen to you and the last thing we want is to play at the people in the room.”
In 2010 The Adventure Spirit will release its first full-length studio album Grand Standard. Recorded by Craig Pilkington at Audrey Studios and mastered by Ross Cockle at Sing Sing, this album affirms The Adventure Spirit’s readiness to reach larger audiences in Australia and abroad. Singer/guitarist Leigh Young agrees: “We put everything we could into Grand Standard. Every second of every mind-numbing job we worked was just poured into it.
Perhaps that’s the reason why Grand Standard is not just a great listen from start to finish, but an album alive with vigor and purpose. Timeless without being retro, The Adventure Spirit is bound to excite.
