"No Laughing Matter"

NO LAUGHING MATTER
Sitcom actor is ready to
rock Stone Pony
BY MARK VOGER
STAFF WRITER
Here's one for you Jersey Shore trivia buffs:
Carrie's boss on "The King of Queens" used
to bounce at "Bar A."
That is, Alex Skuby — who played Leah
Remini's boss for five seasons on the CBS
sitcom starring Kevin James — was a
bouncer at Bar Anticipation in Belmar.
Neptune native Alex Skuby (left), a onetime "King of Queens"
cast member, and keyboardist Steve Peretiatko.
THE ALEX SKUBY BAND
7 tonight during the Wave Gathering festival with
Christine
Martucci, Toby Lightman, Nicole Atkins and the Sea,
Paperback Radio and Divine Sign — The Stone Pony,
913 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park — $20 one-day pass —
(732) 502-0600, www.stoneponyonline.com or
www.wavegathering.com
Skuby, who was born in Neptune and raised in Manasquan, has switched gears since his "King
of Queens" days. His Alex Skuby band is scheduled to perform tonight at The Stone Pony
during the Asbury Park-wide Wave Gathering festival.
Skuby remembers going to The Stone Pony years ago, though he can't recall who he saw
perform at the venerable venue.
"I'm so psyched to be playing there," Skuby says of the Pony.
"I grew up around it. It's one of those places that's just buried in your brain, being from New
Jersey, because (Bruce) Springsteen and all those people played there. It's the first time I'll be
on this side of the entertainment industry, coming back to Jersey and actually playing. I'm
excited. I'm anxious."
Page 2
Skuby has visited the Shore frequently since attaining television stardom; his father lives in
Spring Lake and his brother in Point Pleasant.
"Going back to Jersey, the towns I visit, I pretty much know everybody anyway," he says. "So
they give me a hard time about it. They joke with me about that stuff. They don't let me
forget where I came from.
"I played soccer. I was in a band when I was 15. I thought we were gonna be rock stars. Of
course, that didn't work out."
But Skuby is getting another shot at that dream with his band, which consists Steve Peretiatko
(keyboards), Jim Adams (guitar), Noah Richardson (guitar), Bill Sturgeon (bass) and Quinn
Crossen (drums).
Skuby and Peretiatko, his main collaborator, met through their wives, who are friendly.
"We got together," Skuby recalls. "I had some songs that had been in my head for, like, 10
years. He had some music and lyrics that we eventually finished off. It all just kind of came
together."
The band's as-yet-untitled debut CD (Skuby is leaning toward self-titling) has a planned
release in early August.
Sitcom acting and music have one thing in common, according to Skuby.
"There's a lot of stress, a lot of pressure, in both," he says. "I'm learning that about the music
industry right now. It's tough. You've gotta get everything down and be tight as a band.
"It's the same thing with acting. You have to be professional. You have to know who's who.
You have to make friends and make connections. Good representation is key, to get you out
there in the first place, get you through the door."
The actor/singer was asked to share some memories of the Shore:
Favorite eats: "I love (The New) Mr. Shrimp in Belmar. My best friend from high school,
"Vinnie' (Vincent Petruzziello), owns that place. That place is awesome, man. When I'm back, I
go there. I always try to steal the stuffed clams. I go right behind the cooler, take 'em out and
start eatin' 'em up. So every time I come in, Vinnie hides the stuffed clams.
"I also love a place called Anthony's in Wall. They have the best Philly cheesesteaks, man. "
Favorite drink at a favorite bar: "I like the Squan Tavern (in Manasquan). I'll go in there and
have a Bass Ale."
Former job: "I bounced at Bar Anticipation on 16th Avenue for, like, three years when I was younger. It was pretty wild." - Asbury Park Press

"Skuby Doo!"

Skuby Do! Alex Skuby Steps off the Screen and Rocks
Out
Saturday, 12 May 2007
Sat. May 12
Shane West, the guy who plays one of the handsome docs on “E.R.” was also the touring singer of the
reconstituted L.A. hardcore punk band, the Germs. Alex Skuby, who had a role on “E.R.” nine years ago, is also
fronting a rock band – the Alex Skuby Band – and is taking
his show on the road, to Mout Blue Norwell Saturday May
12. Coincidence? Well, yes. Skuby is probably best known as
attorney Doug Pruzan, the boss to Leah Remini’s Carrie
Hefferman on the now-ending “King of Queens.” He auditioned
for what he thought would be a guest spot and ended up lasting
five seasons. His character was sacked at the end of 2004 for,
Skuby says, “losing $40 million” for the firm. Skuby calls his
character “a neurotic, anxious, naïve attorney who made a lot
mistakes.”
While Skuby has had a bunch of TV roles (including “CSI” and
“Without a Trace”), he’s been a guitarist and singer for years.
With the “Queens” role over, Skuby thought it was time to get
more serious about his first love. “I’m 34,” he says, “and I
loved music before I ever thought of being an actor. If I get an offer to do something lucrative (acting wise), I will
do it. I’m not gonna push it that far out of my life, but I’m not gonna stay in the rat race. I’m gonna take a year
and focus on the music.” (You can see Skuby as the romantic lead in what he calls a “cute comedy,” “Finding
Preet,” now in video stores.)
Skuby has been playing and writing for years with keyboardist Steve Peretiatko. They’ve currently a quintet, but
looking for a rhythm guitarist so Skuby can be more of a frontman. When he speaks of favorite frontmen, he
mentions David Lee Roth. When he speaks of favorite artists, he’ll include Billy Joel and Metallica. “I like Billy Joel
because he’s an amazing songwriter and phenomenal pianist and he’s forever put himself on the line and been
through a lot of troubles.” Come to think, most of that goes for Metallica, too.
Skuby was born and raised in New Jersey and you can hear the meat-and-potatoes Springsteen/Southside Johnny
sound in his music. (He currently has a five-song EP they’re selling at shows; they hope to release a 10-song disc
later in the year.) He lives in Delaware with his wife and three kids now.
‘’Some songs are ten years old,” Skuby says. “My band is a mixture. Their background is jam bands, Phish, moe.,
and I’m an ‘80s glam-rock era guy, Motley Crue, Van Halen with the big hair and spandex which I will not wear.”
There will be no big hair, either.
What Skuby likes about music “is I feel like I’m connecting.” His acting background he sees as “a non-entity as
far as where my music is, but it’s a plus because it makes people interested – ‘Hey, he was an actor, let’s see
where he’s going?’ It’s getting me and my band in some doors we might not have opened.”
Skuby’s set consists of their 10 originals plus two covers, the Doors’ “Soul Kitchen” and Widespread Panic’s “Time
Zone.” They may try to work up a couple more before their South Shore gigs. Both gigs are free and start at 9:30.
They’ll also be in Boston June 20 at the Paradise with Robert Hazzard, the writer of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,”

MUSIC PREVIEW - Skuby changes his act: Alex Skuby giving acting a rest
to focus on his band
By CHAD BERNDTSON
For The Patriot Ledger
You know Alex Skuby from television: in addition to parts on ‘‘Strip Mall,’’
‘‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’’ ‘‘ER,’’ ‘‘Chicago Hope,’’ ‘‘House,’’ ‘‘Becker’’
and ‘‘CSI,’’ he logged five seasons as attorney Doug Pruzan on CBS’
‘‘King of Queens.’’
But a lifelong music and songwriting jones has recently steered the 34-
year-old Skuby in another direction: rock ’n’ roll frontman. He has a batch
of original songs with his eponymous, six-piece band and they’re ready
for action - with two South Shore hotspots on the docket as part of a feel-
things-out tour in Northeastern markets.
‘‘I got sick of the acting - bending over backwards - and just got frustrated
with the whole process,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve loved music forever. I’m just now
coming into it, but I’ve been jumping around like a fool since I was 5. I’m
not the best singer in the world, but I can shake (butt)!’’
The group arrives at Hull’s Red Parrot tomorrow night, and then heads to Mount Blue in Norwell Saturday. Skuby added the
gigs - in addition to spots on Fox 25 Morning News and CN8 Nightbeat today - after friends in the area suggested the bars as
locations to try things out.
The Skuby band is a versatile pop-rock unit that skews everywhere from jammy, Phish-style expansion to Metallica-metal
power chords and Billy Joel/Elton John style melodies. Skuby describes himself as having more of a rock ’n’ roll background,
whereas many of his band members come from a jamband setting.
Skuby was born in Neptune, N.J. - Springsteen country - and now splits his time between Hollywood and the Delaware coast.
With his originals in hand, he first linked up with keyboardist Steve Peretiako, who also had a slate of original songs, and the
two started performing as an acoustic duo.
‘‘We played some songs in L.A., and the feedback we got was that they were good, but we needed a full band,’’ Skuby said.
‘‘So we hooked it up, and we’ve been jamming for more than two months now, so we decided it was time to go out and play
some gigs.’’
They cut an album with Craig ‘‘Valentino’’ Williams (R. Kelly, Death Row Records), and there’s a mix of studio tracks and live
cuts at the band’s MySpace page, www.myspace.com/thealexskubyband.
Skuby started on acoustic guitar, Dave Matthews-style, but is now a hands-free lead vocalist (‘‘It gives me time to do a shot
or smoke a cigarette’’) with lead guitar duties handled by Jim Adams. Bassist Bill Sturgeon, drummer Quinn Crossen, and
rhythm guitarist Noah Richardson round out the group.
The band will do two sets at each show this weekend: an acoustic set of originals, and then an electric set mixing originals
and covers. Ultimately, Skuby said, covers are customer service - the band really wants to play original songs and not stay
on a bar-band circuit.
As for what’s til now been his major career path, Skuby hasn’t given up acting, he said it’s just time to spread wings in a
different direction.
‘‘I was a huge Van Halen fan - David Lee Roth was the quintessential frontman, and I was in awe of that,’’ he said, discussing
his early influences. ‘‘I didn’t know if I had the energy for it, but I realized, hey, I think I might. I’m 34, so this is the time to give
it a shot.’

The Alex Skuby Band.
At the Red Parrot, 1 Hull Shore Dr, Hull, 9:30 p.m., tomorrow (free), and at Mount Blue, 707 Main St., Norwell, 9:30 p.m.
Saturday (781-659-0050 for details). Also at the Paradise Lounge in Boston, June 20. For more details, check out

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM SMALL SCREEN TO BIG SOUND

Life After King of Queens is Music to Alex Skuby’s Ears

“A versatile pop-rock unit that skews everywhere from jammy, Phish-style expansion to Metallica-metal power chords and Billy Joel/Elton John style melodies” – Quincy (MA) Patriot Ledger

MILFORD, DE – You know him best for his five seasons on the soon-ending CBS sitcom King of Queens. Now it’s time to get to know Alex Skuby for the career he’s launching in earnest as a singer-songwriter and leader of THE ALEX SKUBY BAND.

The ALEX SKUBY BAND creates “pop-rock with an edge,” a reflection of Skuby’s wide-ranging influences, from Billy Joel to Metallica, and his current fixation with Dave Matthews and Ben Harper. The result is music that’s deeply introspective with delicate melodies, whether propelled by driving rhythms or gently colored by deliberate percussive flourishes. The band already has performed live on several TV shows this spring, including Backstage with Barry Nolan (CN8/Comcast Network), Fox Morning News (Boston), 10! Show (NBC10/Philadelphia) and Your Morning (CN8).

THE ALEX SKUBY BAND – Skuby on lead vocals, co-writer Steve Peretiatko on keyboards, Jim Adams on lead guitar, Noah Richardson on rhythm guitar, Bill Sturgeon on bass, and Quinn Crossen on drums - has been in and out of the recording studio since the fall, playing clubs from Los Angeles to the Delaware shore, where Skuby lives during his Hollywood down time. Craig “Valentino” Williams (R.Kelly, Death Row Records, Oprah, World Peace One) is producing THE ALEX SKUBY BAND’s upcoming full-length album, featuring all Skuby originals. Several tracks can be heard at www.myspace.com/thealexskubyband, where the video for “What to Say” featuring singer-model Anna Garcia (aka Anna Fantastic), also can be viewed.

“The reason I’m doing this is simple,” says Skuby. “There is nothing more powerful then writing a song and creating an atmosphere through music. It connects us all.”

It’s mere coincidence that Skuby is funneling his creative efforts into making music just as King of Queens is finally leaving the airwaves at the end of the 2006-07 TV season. His tenure as attorney Doug Pruzan, boss to Leah Remini’s Carrie Heffernan, ended two years ago. Though he continued to maintain a highly visible acting career which has included roles on Strip Mall, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and ER and other TV guest appearances on 24, House, Chicago Hope, Becker and CSI, Skuby also began taking his lifelong passion for music more seriously. He’s been writing songs and playing guitar for over a decade, but not till this year has he decided to make music his first priority.

“Music has been my passion since birth - before the acting, before the love of the stage,” says the Skuby, raised in Neptune, NJ, while Bruce Springsteen was exploding to international prominence from the next town over, Asbury Park. “There is nothing more powerful than writing a song and creating an atmosphere through music. It connects us all.”

"Cooldog Concert"

4/27/07

I had heard 'The Alex Skuby Band's music on-line, so I was prepared for their rich, smooth sound. What took me by surprise (but shouldn't have) was Alex's total command of the stage - a passion and presence that really drew the audience in. This band is going to go places, and I'm glad we're along for the ride. - Beth Fizell, Cooldog Concert Series
