Biography

The Antecedents are an indie rock band from Portland, Oregon. After playing local venues together for two years they recorded their debut album, “Letters from Rome”, released in April 2007. The band strives to create diverse music, which is both distinct and moving. Their music includes catchy pop-rock songs with a punk, political, literary edge, contemplative lyrical storytelling, trip-rock, apocalyptic ballads and poetry interpreted as indie-rock.

The band relies on well-crafted songs and a collaborative creative process to bring their ideas from concept to performance. The band members are all influenced by classic rock such as David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Queen but each member also brings a unique musical influence to the overall sound. The jazz influenced guitar and composition of Devan Kansagara, the contemporary rock influence of bassist Jason Lander, the classical training of violinist Clinton Christensen and the Americana/folk music tradition of singer Joe Landry, all strongly influence the overall sound of the band.

When available, the Antecedents work with an ensemble of musicians for live performances. They value the community created by music and are also enthusiastically involved in their local and global community. A portion of the proceeds from their debut album will be donated to the Wallace Medical Center, which provides healthcare for Oregon’s uninsured. The band is also scheduled to perform regularly for Amnesty International’s Rock4Rights – NW, a new non-profit organization promoting and raising funds for human rights and international justice.

Pitchforks & Popstars

Written By: The Antecedents

Welcome everybody to a night in America.
If you got the hooks then you might be,
just another singer lookin kind of hysterical,
or another living legend of the pop elite.

Welcome everybody to a night in America.
Take a wrong turn and you might be,
another senseless victim of a terror scenario,
or the next appearing guest for the corporate kings.

Welcome everybody to a night in America.
If you watch the news then you might think,
we’re the only living land in the Western hemisphere,
and immigrants are evidence that war is peace.

And oh, this is your night…
And oh, this is your night.

Welcome everybody to a night in America.
You can buy enough time on your TV,
that if you wanna take another shot at my character,
just take another commercial break with me.

And oh, this is your night…
And oh, this is your night.

Give me your tired your poor your huddled masses,
yearning to breathe free.
The wretched refuse of your teaming shores,
send these the homeless, tempest tossed to me.

Welcome every body to a night in America (And oh, this is your night)
Welcome every body to a night in America (I lift my lamp beside the golden door)
Welcome every body to a night in America (And oh, this is your night)
Welcome every body to a night in America

Welcome (Welcome every body to a night in America)
Everyone (Welcome every body to a night in America)
Tonight (Welcome every body to a night in America)
Tonight is your night (Welcome every body to a night in America)

Laika in space

What can you say

Of the human race

From your tiny metal box

La da la da

Can you make out

Guy sitting here

Swearing talking 'bout

The price of gasoline

La da la da

What did you think

Of that blue disk in grey clouds

Brilliantly shining like a
bejeweled starlet

And the gearshift, stickshift, control knobs

Levers dials and flashing lights

Were all too much for you

And the gearshift, stickshift, control knobs

Levers dials and flashing lights

Were all too much for you

Laika in space

Way up high there

Have you found your place

Do you miss your

Close up nose down,
view of the world

And the tree where you would

You would like to lay curled

Lie down lie down

And the gear shift, stick shift, control knobs

Levers dials and flashing lights

Were all too much for you
And the gearshift, stick shift, control knobs

Levers dials and flashing lights

Were all too much for you

And the gear shift, stick shift, control knobs

Levers dials and flashing lights

Were all too much for you

And the gearshift, stick shift, control knobs

Levers dials and flashing lights

Were all too much for you

Ditty of First Desire

Written By: The Antecedents

In the green morning I wanted to be a heart.
A heart.
And in the ripe evening I wanted to be a nightingale.
A nightingale.

Soul, turn orange-colored.
Soul, turn the color of love.
Soul, turn orange-colored.
Soul, turn the color of love.

In the vivid morning I wanted to be myself.
A heart.
And at the evening's end I wanted to be my voice.
A nightingale.

Soul, turn orange-colored.
Soul, turn the color of love.
Soul, turn orange-colored.
Soul, turn the color of love.

In the green morning I wanted to be a heart.
And in the ripe evening I wanted to be a nightingale.
In the vivid morning I wanted to be myself.
And at the evening's end I wanted to be my voice.

Soul, turn orange-colored.
Soul, turn the color of love.
Soul, turn orange-colored.
Soul, turn the color of love.
