There is something about watching The Art Of perform that is difficult to define at first.

It’s not the way guitar player and vocalist Bob Daly’s eyes greet everyone in the audience like they’re old friends. It’s not the clockwork rhythm precision of drummer Chris Payson and bassist John Killawee. It’s not even the punching-the-keys-like-they-owe-him-money playing of Matt Amyotte.

It doesn’t take long for that mysterious element to reveal itself – these guys are actually having fun. They don’t play a show that is unnecessarily arty or a self-indulgent showcase for their substantial talents. No, they play a show that is about having fun, both for them and for the audience.

The Art Of play songs they love. Whether it’s floor-shaking rock numbers or the songs that Daly describes with a laugh as, “sad bastard music”, that love is something that audiences can’t help but get swept by. It’s something you can’t fake. And it’s something you can’t ignore.
