Biography

Passion is the fuel that drives independent music and nowhere is this more prevalent than in Goderich, Ontario - home of "radio friendly modern rockers", the Ashgrove. Together since Dec 1994, with 3 albums in their roster, the Ashgrove have released their 4th independently produced effort on May 6th, 2004, which has been the result of 3 years of preparation. Not just a collection of songs, this album is rich in production and weaves musical segue’s throughout, tying the songs together, so that the listener is left with something new to discover upon each listen.
With 1999’s release of Photo Album, three of the singles found their way onto playlists at commercial radio stations across Canada including FM96 (London), K106.3 (Sarnia), The Rock (Chatham) and FM94 (Prince George, BC). The buzz was started with the first single Beauty Myth, but things took off with Never Change when it spent three weeks on the "Top 5 Request" chart at FM94 and the video - directed by guitarist Lonny Doherty - received frequent feature play on Much Music's Indie Spotlight. Songs from Photo Album also received feature play at a list of stations such as CFOX (Vancouver), CJAY (Calgary), Edge 102 (Toronto) and CHOM-FM (Montreal).
Licensing opportunities presented themselves in the 4 years after the release, when television programs such as Dawson’s Creek, Hack, Party of Five, and a made for television movie called Fast Food High all used songs in their programming.
Veterans of the stage, The Ashgrove have shared spots with the Headstones, 54-40, the Killjoys, Danko Jones, Rymes with Orange, See Spot Run and international recording artists K’s Choice, Vertical Horizon, the Verve Pipe while promoting Photo Album and their debut release Somnambulant. The band has also been invited to showcase at prestigious events such as NXNE and Canadian Music Week.
With the release of their latest cd, 1000 Summers the Ashgrove are currently booking shows and playing live in support of this release, which can be described as a modern rock guitar record, with a focus on strong lead vocals based on a 1970’s “album” feel.

Pretending (1000 Summers)

Written By: the Ashgrove

Pretending

Are you pretending?
Or do you mean it
Cos I don’t know
A new beginning
Or are we finished
I just don’t know
You’re wasting your time
You take up all mine
Come on let’s go
Are we pretending?
Is this worth mending?
I don’t think so …

See the horizon
It’s fires burning
In your glazed eyes
Sometimes it’s easy
For you to please me
With all these lies
I’m wasting my time
You’ve made up your mind
Come on lets go
Are you pretending?
Or do you feel it
I don’t know …

If you were to free me
One day you’d see me
Then you’d know
A new beginning
Through fire and singing
And fields of snow
So make up your mind
We’re running out of time
I still don’t know …
These feelings that take you
One day they’ll break
So just don’t go

Without You (1000 Summers)

Written By: the Ashgrove

Without You

Those distant nights I still recall
Sky full of stars the cresent moon
It ends too soon

In time we’re all made memories fools
Things look so blurred in the rear view.
As I left you

Were there changes that I could have made
Now I have only myself to blame

I cannot live without you
Never dreamed I’d be without you
My faith and hope made untrue
All I lived and breathed was for you
I cannot live without you
No one else that I can turn to
Is this what life has come to
To forever live without you

The lessons are so bitterly learned
Not to put my faith and trust in love
I won’t play the fool

A side of you so rarely seen
Can’t believe the words I hear are true
They are so cruel

In time I’m told this pain will fade
But I’m not that bold I’m not that brave

I cannot live without you
Never dreamed I’d be without you
My faith and hope made untrue
All I lived and breathed was for you
How can I live without you
No one else that I can turn to
Is this what life has come to
To forever live without you

Never Change (Photo Album)

Written By: the Ashgrove

Walked past your house today
Under lights that amber fade
Storm clouds lined with rain
And you would never change

You would never change

All I wanted to do
Was to leave those pictures In the frames
All the things that I would do
And you would never change

You would never change

Now you’re so far….
