"Utah’s The Average anything but Average"

“Utah’s The Average anything but Average”
David Parker

Everybody is looking for the fresh new sound that everybody will love, Utah’s own The Average just happen to be the ones who went out and found it. With a unique blend of… of…well, of music so unique it doesn’t really have a clearly defined genre. They call it “Ghettotech” which can only be best described as a raw mix of pop, alternative, and a high does of classic rock, drawing slight comparisons to Coheed & Cambria and maybe a dash of Queen.

Formed in 2006 the three part, and first ever Ghettotech group, consists of Matt Grimshaw on guitar and vocals, Lane O’Berry on bass, and Alonso Sarinana on drums. Recording and releasing “The Slightly Less Than Average EP” the band still wasn’t satisfied re-recording and re-mastering the original material as well as adding two new tracks releasing it again in 2008.

The band performs stellar bass lines, guitar riffs and drum beats so amazing you can’t believe it was done with only three members. In addition to musical talent they also provide strong lyrics, which are laid back yet serious, and overall relatable. Singing from topics ranging from losing and remembering a loved one, to things everyone agrees on, and back to requesting one more chance. Even though it’s nearly impossible to pick a best song from the EP, the spot most likely belongs to “Happy Again”. The feel good track is about the ability to start and be happy again. It kicks off with the most addictive bass line this side of the Mississippi.

The Average always keeps their songs sing able and close to the fans. The song “Sweet Mary” was written for a co-worker after she (Mary) asked the band to write a song for her. Keeping it fun but serious the song sings:”Not sure what it is you do all day, but I’m sure you do it well. When my life’s problems come out to play, you send them straight to hell, yeah, straight to hell. Oh Sweet Mary, why don’t you, oh won’t you take a break with me.” In addition to “Sweet Mary” and “Happy Again” each song seems to have deeper personal meaning, yet relatable to anyone and everyone.

Since creating their new myspace account in November of 2007 the official band site (http://www.myspace.com/theraverage801) has already hit over 1700 fans and counting. The guys are planning an upcoming summer tour from June 19th to 29th with fellow Utah band Autamary, which is set to hit various spots in Utah, as well as Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, and California almost solidifying the fact their friends number is sure to skyrocket.

Without a doubt The Average is already the best kept secret in Salt Lake City, with this much talent the world is already starting to take notice. “The Slightly Less Than Average EP” is already available through Sno Cap, and amazon.com, and soon to be added to the iTunes library it’s just a matter of time until The Average busts out of Salt Lake and tours the country. Watch out Bert McCracken, you have company. It may be a bold statement but they just may be the best band from Utah since The Used.

Bio

This trio started off as your average band, guitarist meets drummer at work and the jam sessions began. After a few days of playing in drummer Alonso's basement, it was apparent they would need a bass player to complete the band. Matt then convinced his long-time friend, Lane, to dust off the old bass he had and learn to play. It didn’t take long for the three musicians to click and pretty soon, songs just started to come together during their jam sessions. It was then they started booking shows and shortly after began headlining shows. Now with their recently released EP, out in March of 08' and amazing sales of it online and at show, The band embarked a summer tour. After rave reviews and accepting an offer from Arcade Records. The band has gone into the studio to record a full length album which is due to be released late 09' to again, go out and tour and get the name The Average out to the world. There's no denying that this band is anything but average.
