Bio

The Bad News, comprised of Dash Speaks and Nickname, bring unique artistry to the world of hip-hop. The Bad News incorporates politically and socially relevant lyricism with all the cutting edge elements of a crossover musical style. Despite their close cultural and musical ties to New York City, Dash Speaks and Nickname transcend a traditional East Coast sound. A live Bad News performance features two vastly different performers grounded by the smooth sounds of a live band. Armed with an all-encompassing brand of entertainment that showcases conscious, musical hip-hop, The Bad News appeals to a wide demographic. The hip-hop duo speaks the languages of pop-culture suburbia and urban realism with a fan base that solidifies The Bad News’ diversified swagger and sound.

Since establishing the label, ¬The Bad News has performed at New York City venues such as The Knitting Factory, Don Hill’s, The Pussycat Lounge, The Lion’s Den, and the world famous S.O.B.’s. In June of 2006, Dash Speaks held a record release party for his solo album, “The Revolution,” in Soho for his personal fan base that came out 500 strong. In addition, The Bad News have gone on multiple Northeast college tours performing at schools like Lehigh (Pennsylvania), Clark University (Massachusetts), McGill University (Montreal), and Plattsburgh State (New York). In April 2007, The Bad News opened for Lupe Fiasco and State Radio in Worcester, Massachusetts. A month later, the hip-hop band opened for The Holiday Parade and Years Gone By at The Knitting Factory. That’s a lot of talk, but our actions speak as loud our words. Check out the revamped Screw York Records website, www.screwyork.com, where you can view a full album autopsy (artists' thoughts, lyrics, and artwork) and download The Bad News’ sophomore album, The Name Speaks Volumes, which was recently nominated as a finalist for album of the year in the 7th annual Independent Music Awards.

Dash Speaks is not only an MC; he is a producer, singer, and songwriter. He currently attends the City College of New York where he majors in Political Science and International Studies. Dash uses this knowledge, along with his natural star quality to interestingly address a variety of topics.

NickName covers a wide spectrum of material: from fashion, to introspective observation, to the madness of love. Nick has grown frustrated with the lack of creativity that defines modern-day, mainstream hip-hop, and remains determined to forge his own identity.
