"Next Wave in Music Series"

The Basals closed the night strong, these veterans of the independent music circuit are real pros when it comes to live performance. Led by front woman Holli, who is a classically trained vocalist and a dynamic stage presence, they blend the new wave of Deborah Harry with the kick ass rock of Pat Benatar. They did a few songs from each of their albums including the new wavish "Fine" to the hard rocking "Apology", as well as a couple of brand new ones like "Crawl" and "Down Like Rain" off their fourth full length cd, "Songs From Suburban Avenue".

"Review"

Warm-and-fuzzy female-fronted power-pop is alive and well, thanks to The Basals who gave a splendid performance this night. Sultry lead-singer Holli dove right in with their catchy opener “Dive”, while Mike (bass), Matt (drums), and Joe (guitar) shook the place down. These longtime troopers of the underground Long Island new wave movement were in fine form on this night.

“Dive” was followed by the radio-ready “Fine” and the lofty “One Word”. The powerful hooks of “Crawl” and “Sir Lance” had the place throbbing, and Holli’s vocal range was at it’s far-reaching best here.

The rumbling bassline of “Time Bomb” was masterfully laid down by Mike, and then we were treated to a heavenly rendition of “Angel In My Pocket”. “Time Flies”, “Talk”, and “Barracuda” rounded out the set nicely. Then came the encores; delightful offerings of cover tunes including popular hits by The Cranberries and Modern English. Very few Long Island bands capture a timeless essence in their music like The Basals do, and I strongly encourage you to check them out next time they appear in your area.
