Bio

John Hoeffleur formed The Beauty Shop in the year 2000 in Urbana IL. Demos were circulated and soon the band released Yr Money Or Yr Life on Parasol Records in 2001, which was later licensed to Shoeshine Records (a label ran by the one and only Francis MacDonald of Teenage Fanclub and BMX Bandits fame) for release in the UK. After critical acclaim and a few tours, The Beauty Shop’s follow up LP, Crisis Helpline, was released to UK and then US audiences, first on Shoeshine (2004) and later on London-based Snapper Music (2005). Again, the release preceded fistfuls of critical acclaim from taste-making publications like NME and Mojo. Alas, critical acclaim does not pay the bills.
Despite glowing press and considerable touring, The Beauty Shop remains a best-kept secret. Without the funds to record the album of their dreams, The Beauty Shop recorded a handful of demos with skilled recording friend Adam Schmitt over the course of a single day in 2007. Mirroring their start, these recordings were meant only to serve as demos; a ploy by which to lure agents, promoters, and record labels. Discontent to simply sit around with fingers-crossed, the band pressed up some copies themselves and self- released these demos under the apt title Just Some Demos. Playing more like a live record than a studio creation, Just Some Demos was completed in about 18 total hours for a budget of $100.
Until someone wisely bankrolls a real record, The Beauty Shop plans to focus on writing more music and performing live anywhere that will have them.
