Smokin Jo presents the beep

The Beep are Smokin Jo & Michael Palmer.

Smokin Jo is one of the most talented DJ’s to emerge from the British dance music scene and over her 20 years as a DJ and producer Jo’s undeniably cutting edge sound has carved her a niche in clubland. Jo made a name for herself in those early days at Back to Basics, Boys Own, Puscha and Trade afterhours she has since then played in pretty much every corner of the globe and in every major nightclub you could care to mention: Womb in Tokyo, Panorama Bar in Berlin, Warung in Brazil, Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos, Crobar in New York, Vinyl in New York, Zouk in Singapore, Fabric in London and Cocoon in Frankfurt are just some of the venues she has played in recent years and of course Jo still holds a residency at Space in Ibiza for We Love. Jo is still the only female DJ to have won DJ Magazines DJ Of The Year award and alongside opening for Grace Jones, Jo regards this as her highest achievement.

Michael Palmer is a musician, writer and producer based in East London who eats sleeps and dreams music 24/7. Over the years Michael has worked and performed worldwide with a variety of acts (Merlins, Healer Selector, Tom Baxter, Charlie Winston, Sam Semple). Having cut his teeth as a producer at London's Metropolis studios Michael also diversified into scoring for film, TV and commercials (BBC, Kerrang!, BMW, Channel 4 etc) with his production company Michael Palmer Music Ltd founded in 2001. As a solo artist Michael goes by the name 'Inventurer' with his debut album entitled 'Tick-Tock' due for release in early 2011.

Jo and Michael met through mutual friends, Michael had always been keen on the idea of playing live alongside a DJ improvising over the music, Jo had just finished her last live project so was also keen to get back to performing her own music live and had always wanted to work with a musician. So the pair teamed up, got in the studio and came up with some new tunes with the aim to re creating them live on stage. Jo handles all the digital side of things, running loops and doing effects along with some vocals, Michael plays keyboards, lead guitar, bass guitar and just about anything else he can get his hands on. They have an amazing drummer whose nickname is ”MIDI” as he is so in time with the music, MIDI plays along with them on stage, Jo conducts the proceedings, telling the boys when to do certain high and low points. Their musical style is a hybrid of good old fashioned stompin' house music, funk, electro and breaks, a real sound clash of styles, which at their live shows tears the roof off.
