The Beginners is a unique Mpls. based pop rock band with dreamy poetic lyrics, hook driven melodies and an intense, spirited delivery.
“I kinda feel like the guy in the movie Vanishing Point when we’re playing live”, says lead singer, Jeffry Becker, “You know he’s driving that 70’s Challenger across the desert with nothing to lose. Well when we start a song it’s that way for me. If I hold anything back in a performance then I’ve missed the point. At the time, it’s all there is to live for.”
Beckers’ vocals, soulful and desperate, are an instant focus upon first listen. They are accompanied by cascading guitars and a solid rhythm section propelled by talented drummer Micheal Helm. Helm, who engineered and produced the bands new cd, “Vow” co-founded the group with Becker in 2002 after the two had played together off and on in various bands.
The bands influences range from 60’s British Pop, to singer-songwriters such as Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Nilsson to more obscure artists like The Only Ones, Supergrass, Suede, Guided By Voices and so on… There is also a huge Soul Music influence on the band along with International Music and American Folk and Classic Country.
