Joka Wild and Travisty the Lazy MC make up the aptly-titled rap group The Benchwarmers Clique, hailing from Palm Beach, Florida. Their soulful sound is refreshing, feel-good music with lyrics that are thoughtful, and these emcees possess an easy, laid-back swagger that’s perfect for summer (think Tribe, Mos Def, Talib).

“So Official Like,” the debut release from The Benchwarmers Clique has something that very few Hip-Hop albums have - something the “grown & sexy” crowd is sure to appreciate.

That thing is – class. Joka Wild and Travisty the Lazy MC, who met on a South Florida basketball court, float through all 19 tracks of this CD like modest pimps, with intelligent lyrics and laid back stories about the lives they live and the lives they hope to live. The class that permeates this disc exists not only in the lyrics, but also in the crystal clear production, courtesy of Camillion Enterprises.

“Sparkle,” the album opener, and “Love it a Lot,” which features the smooth R&B crooning of Don Wilson, both serve as anthems for living and loving the good life. Both songs evoke images of swaying champagne flutes and French cuff button up shirts in the VIP room. And the ladies at the party will love tracks like “Sky Lady” and “Searchin’.”
However, it’s not all about the good life on “So Official Like.” They take time out on “Reflections of a MC” to relate to the common man and let the listener know they’re going through the same struggle too, and their sense of humor is revealed on “Kung Fu.”
The Benchwarmers Clique have done what few hip-hop artists have done by creating a CD that wins the approval of the hardcore hip-hop heads, as well as the ladies and the hip-hop sophisticates. Why? Because it has class. It’s so official like that.

With a little more time to kill at the party, I found myself chilling in a small beach seat somebody had left by the bass rig watching the Benchwarmers Clique. They consisted of two emcees trading verses over samples on vinyl. A great stage presence made them fun to watch. The audience sang back call and responses with an energy that’s rarely found outside a downtown nightclub at 3:30 in the morning. - Written by Christopher Lazaga
