"A Musician Among Us"

A Musician Among Us

March 3, 2010 • written by Hayley Tyvoll

Samuel Benedon, a junior at Germantown High School, was the opening act at Germantown’s December Coffeehouse, a fundraiser to support the AIDS Foundation. This, however, wasn’t Benedon’s first act as a guitarist and rock musician. At the age of eight, Samuel Benedon’s focus on music started. He and his father have performed numerous times together at many gigs near our area including The Village Pub and Grill, The Farmstead, and The Klavier Lounge. “My interest came from my dad the night he played Sweet Jane by The Velvet Underground at the nature center in Newburg when I was eight years old. I loved the sound of the music,” Benedon said.

Nine years later, he knows exactly what his audiences are like and how to keep himself relaxed before every show. “Usually I will have a Hall’s menthol tab so my throat’s not sore and run my hands through hot water. No one wants to play guitar with cold hands,” Benedon joked.

Peter Winarski, also a student at Germantown High School, performed with Benedon at the Coffeehouse Fundraiser in December. It was the first performance Peter has ever done in a public area, but with Samuel he felt calm and collected. “It felt like a safety blanket, having him right next to me performing,” said Winarski. It was, indeed, a crowd pleaser when they performed “Live Forever” by The Oasis, and “Souled Out” by Conor Oberst. “He did well engaging his audience and putting on a great show,” said Anna Spies, a junior at Germantown High School.

As for Benedon, there is no way he is ending his interest in music any time soon. “Out of anybody in this high school, he has the greatest chance of becoming a musician,” Winarski said. With tremendous aspirations and history, this will not be our last time hearing from Samuel Benedon. His dream is to buy better equipment and perform across the country. - High School Press

Bio

Our energy and ability to read crowds has always been among our best assets when doing the club gigs. We've done numerous festival gigs, and we employ the same crowd techniques, but usually book those as a classic rock band. Chuck has played the music scene in Milwaukee for many years, formerly studying with George Pritchett, playing with most of Milwaukee's notorious players. Sam, who is only 17, has played live, and onstage, with Danny Johnson, Steppenwolf's lead guitarist who is formerly with Rick Derringer, Rod Stewart, Eddie Van Halen, etc. The family "act" part is a good sell, as well.
Sam and Chuck are both multi-instrumentalists, coming from a family deeply rich in the arts. Sam plays clarinet, mandolin, piano, drums, bass, dobro, slide, finger style picking. His influences are mainly Hendrix and Clapton, although his repertoire consists of music from the last 80 years. He is a true natural musician.
