"The Benways Guitarist Departs"

The Benways have gotten Yoko’d.

Founding guitarist and decade-long Boston music-scene veteran Dan Dronseiko has decided to part ways with his Boston-based jam band, making Saturday night’s gig at Great Scott in Allston his last.

The news comes after the improvisational guitarist got engaged and decided to relocate to Phoenix to be closer to his fiancee’s family. Unlike the Beatles, the Benways are holding auditions and will continue to perform.

Before helping form the Benways a few years ago, Dronseiko performed with his current band mates, vocalist Ricky Ginsburg and bassist Todd Rourke, in Boston jammers Three Percent, a lineup that logged close to 1,000 shows in just less than a decade.

Joining the going-away gig are the Indobox, Ithaca’s Jimkata and the usual artists, jewelers and vendors that accompany the Benways’ shows. Tickets are $10; details at www.greatscottboston.com.

"The Benways jam to their own beat"

Hotline: The Benways jam to their own beat

The Benways get called a lot of things, but don’t call them just another jam band.
Evolving from former roots-rockers Three Percent, the Benways’ live show blends psychedelia, classic rock and funk with live improvisation. To flippantly call the Benways, who play the Paradise Rock Club Saturday at 7 p.m., just another jam band would be selling short the vibrant quartet’s vision.
“If people are expecting jazzy, written-out, heavily composed instrumental music they won’t really find that with us,” said
vocalist/percussionist Ricky Ginsburg. “We do jam. We do have 10-minute songs. But we focus on energy and dance-driven grooves over complex arrangements. We also do some pop-esque material as well.”

What also separates the Benways from other bands in the scene is their insistence on making every show a party. Last year at Bill’s Bar, the band brought a jug band to open, while myriad vendors lined the long strip of leather booths selling jewelry and trinkets.
“We spend a lot of time and thought creating an atmosphere around our music,” Ginsburg said. “We try to have our performances be multidimensional and not just the typical setup where you walk into a club, get a drink and watch a band.”
After a sold-out New Year’s Eve show on Lansdowne Street, the band is now looking to head back into the studio to record a full-length album and a separate acoustic release. From writing songs together to playing them live, it’s still all about improvisation.
“None of us are formally trained and I think that adds to
our sound,” Ginsburg said. “It’s much more organic and unpolished than a lot of the jam bands that I’ve heard.”
The Benways perform Saturday night with Spiritual Rez and the Indobox at the Paradise Rock Club, 967 Commonwealth Ave. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets: $12. Go to www.myspace.com/benways for more information. - Boston Herald by Michael Marotta

Bio

Behind the release of their self titled EP in the fall of ’06, The Benways have steadily built a legion of fans all throughout the northeast. The band's unique songwriting and powerful dance-grooves entertained a sold-out Bills Bar on Boston’s famed Lansdowne St. this past New Years Eve.

The spring and summer of '07 have shown to be extremely succesful for the high energy Benways, sharing the stage with RAQ, Spiritual Rez and The Indobox at Bostons famed Paradise Rock Club. The band played several acoustic gigs this summer at the Bank of America Pavilion VIP tent with the likes of Bob Weir & Ratdog, Keller Williams and Widespread Panic headlining the main stage.

The Benways are a collaborative group of musicians and artists from the Boston area. The group revolves around former members of the band Three Percent; Ricky Ginsburg, Todd Rourke and Dan Dronseiko. Currently joining the three is drummer Trevor Walker. Former collaborators include Pete Pidgeon (Blue Man Group), Ian Evans(Royal Sound) and Aaron Jackson. Collectively these musicians bring a wealth of talent and experience to the stage. The music draws inspiration from many genres including classic rock, R&B, funk, psychadelia, and good old rootsy country rock. Improvisation always plays a major part in every live performance which makes for a unique experience each night. The band is well known for it's original approach to performing and their ablity to throw a party. Though leaning on years of experience the group is still in it's infant stages and relies heavily on the audience to help them shape this thing that will become The Benways. Please help support local artist and the local music scene. It is vitally important that you all make the effort to show some love for the little people. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertising so we are counting you to spread the word. See you at the shows!
