The Big Creak might just be the quintessential geek rock band in existence, which is fair praise for a bunch of Bowling Green expatriates now dwelling in Cowtown. Combining the cynicism of Ben Folds Five with quirky pop soundscapes reminiscent of a less-pedestrian Barenaked Ladies, Makeshift Sessions sounds as professional as any Eels record you could name, and with almost as much off-the-wall humor.
The band can turn a sardonic phrase as good as anyone, such as “If I could have one wish, you’d be someone else” kicking off Somehow (Note To Self), but at the same time, Lucy is essentially a jam number where a plaintive request to the girl in question is merely repeated over and over again, sans elaboration. And it doesn’t need any, either.
By the time you get to Yeah, which sees the group seemingly taking the piss out of Fatboy Slim, you’re addicted. The songs have more hooks than a fleet of pirate ships, more humor than Comedy Central, and more than enough talent and vision to tie it all together. The Big Creak is excellent, and the sky’s the limit for the band. Catch ’em locally while you still can.
