The worldplay. The Production. The energy. Hip-Hop has a lot to offer to the musical genres. So it comes as no surprise that some of rock's biggest acts have sampled a thing or two from Hip-Hop.

Last spring, at our Quick's Big Thing shindig, the boys in the rap-rock-soul outfit Big Red Rooster walked away with the Next Big Thing honor. It was an appropriate award for a band that goes about its business in workman like fashion. All choices seem to be based on working the angles and creating buzz – and there hasn't been a misstep yet.

The group's collaboration with Dallas rap legends Mr. Pookie and Mr. Lucci opened the door for further genre-bending explorations, including the massive-sounding "How You Like That" with Slim Thug.

The band also signed a production deal with local heroes Play-N-Skillz that places them on an even bigger stage. All this networking has helped to expand the sound of a band that formed when its original members were attending SMU.

The recent addition of R&B crooner J Sabin complements MC Multi-ID (above) in a way that adds soul to the funk-rock foundation, thus removing it further from the Linkin Park-Limp Bizkit realm.

The group picks and chooses its spots, so Dallas gigs are few and far between. But you'll get a chance to taste them live next Wednesday when they open for Earshot at House of Blues.

It took a moment (more on that later), but I'm a Big Red Rooster booster. Their show started at 1 a.m. on the patio at Bourbon Rocks (the BoDeans were playing the main room). Drunk is the outfit of choice, it seems, on Sixth Street after midnight, but I waded through that to get to my destination.

Then, out of rap-where, lead singer Reyez unleashed his falsetto. And that's when I noticed that I was sinking into the gravel and sand (the term "patio" was used very loosely by the venue); My chocolate suede boots will never be the same. But I digress. These guys put out slick music that is a danceable hybrid of every genre they claim to be a member of. I love truth in advertising ...

The band was tight, and rapper Multi ID, with an artfully sculpted mohawk, played his part to the hilt, prancing and preening like the Rooster he is. Then they played "Beautiful" and I was transported to the 80s and Whodini or UTFO or even LL Cool J back when he was wooing the ladies. The song had a very affecting, lilting chorus that just tells a girl she's beautiful. When you listen to it, and I know you're going to, see if you recognize the refrain. And we stayed in the 80s when the group unleashed its reimagining of (underrated, IMO) Kool & the Gang's "Fresh": the same beat, with lyrics close enough to jog your memory.

Fortunately, I had found solid ground by then (poor boots, poor ankles). Good thing, too, because dancing to anything remotely linked to Kool & the Gang is recommended.

The last song of the set, "How You Like That," was a rock-Southern rap mix that had the crowd yelling for more by the end.

I quit trying to categorize the band when I started making up genres: electronic rock fusion? rap-lite R&B? rop-rack? R&R? Whatever you want to call it (and please send us your suggestions), it was a whole lot of fun. The crowd loved it, too, so much so that when the band's encore was stopped by a club employee, the crowd didn't mince any words when they voiced their displeasure. Let's just say it sounded like this: Austin yucks.

Dallas, Texas rock/rap/R&B band, The Big Red Rooster, are huge within their city, but now, after linking up with platinum producer duo, Play N Skillz, they are poised for greatness. So far, they are working on their debut album and have recorded a single and shot a video with Slim Thug. While in Los Angeles on a promo run, BallerStatus caught up with three members out of six from the band to get to know them.

Remember that whole "rap rock" thing? I mean that was what 1999, 1998? Are we ready to acknowledge that for a time Limp Bizkit was the biggest band in the land? Someone was buying those records.

That brings us to Big Red Rooster, which certainly shouldn't be lumped in with Limp, or Korn or any of those others I'm trying to forget. The Rooster come at you with hooky songs and crunchy riffs, topped off with Multi ID's raps, and Reyez's R&B smoothness. Already a club draw in Texas, B.R.R. are looking to break out nationwide.
