"Radio Indy Review"

13 Nov 2008 22:58
RadioIndy Reviews: “The Single Life” is the debut release from The Big River Bandits, a versatile and talented group with a refined sound that blends traditional and contemporary styles of country music including bluegrass, rockabilly and swing. The lead vocals are shared by founding members Renee Sears and Gerry Power who co-write the band’s original material. Their highly-polished sound is characterized by honest lyrics, heartfelt vocals, and spirited instrumental performances. The group’s mastery of the traditional country style is evident with the energetic “Girls Night Out” and the good-humored “Whisky Dinker's Lament,” with Sears providing the vocals on the former and Power on the latter. “She Don’t Care” is another strong traditional number, featuring a notable lead guitar performance from Power. “Let's Take A Walk” is a more contemporary track featuring a funky groove, baritone sax and blistering lead guitar by Power. “Little Pieces Of My Heart” shows that the group can also shine while performing lovely ballads, and Sears gives a expressive, sincere performance. Sears also infuses her personality into the playful title track “The Single Life,” demonstrating her infectious style and soulful vocal approach. This album will appeal to the young and old, freestyle and line dancers, and fans of both traditional and contemporary country music.

THE SINGLE LIFE
The Big River Bandits
Eden ERCD 924
Country-related material emanating from the UK seems to be a rare commodity these days, so this debut from the Marlow-based 5-piece country-rock outfit The Big River Bandits comes as a welcome release.

What I like about this band is their ability to write their own material and give it oodles of punch aimed at attracting attention from those with a penchant for country-swing, traditional sounds and a little funky rockabilly thrown in for good measure. The opening track, 'Girls Night Out', with its fluid 5-string banjo and feisty lead vocal (from Renee Sears) sets the pace for an excellent album comprising a dozen songs, all penned by various band members but mostly attributed to Renee Sears and Gerry Power, who also handles lead guitar.
Keeping a five-piece unit together in this day and age is no easy task, because the very term 'country music' tends to throw most venues and promoters into negative spasms but these guys are extremely good at what they do. In short, I have no hesitation in giving this album my highest recommendation and wishing the band all success for the future.

"'Country Music People' magazine"

From the South East of England comes the gutsy Big River Bandits - a five piece ensemble blending swing, shuffle and downhome country with a touch of Americana
on their enjoyable debut release, The Single Life. All 12 songs are originals penned by lead singers Renee Sears and Gerry Powers. A real tour de force with some very cool musicianship.
The Bandits, who have been winning rave reviews for their live performances, badly need airplay and more gigs. They can be found on www.myspace.com/thebigriver bandits.
