"Bigger than Bhangra"

by RUPERT BOTTENBERG

Subir “Master-D” Dev and Vishal “DJ Vicious” Urva, partners in Montreal-based unit the BILZ (short for “brother-in-lawz,” which they are), have set ambitious goals for themselves. They’re after a prominent place in the fiercely competitive international Desi dance-music market, a high enough standard of production quality and musical originality to guarantee long-term staying power, and a breakthrough to non-South Asian listeners.

The two, who first made their mark together with an official remix of Keshia Chanté’s “ Does He Love Me,” are certainly qualified for the job. Dev brings 10 years of tabla training and enthusiastic multi-instrumentalism, and extensive history working with local worldbeat and fusion projects, to the table. Urva’s big list of bona fides in the urban party scene, which have seen him behind the decks across the country, have garnered him a long list of contacts and an intuitive sense of what makes a dancefloor go boom. When they roll out for shows in the coming year, they’ll have singer Kashif with them too. “He’s a crazy performer,” says Urva of the former lead songwriter of boy band Inmotion.

The key to both Desi and mainstream market success, the BILZ have astutely grasped, is taking the basic template of bhangra, the tough and funky Indian dance music originating from northern Punjab region, and stretching it in all sorts of directions. “Bhangra has existed for many years now,” says Dev, “so we wanted to give it a little twist.”

There’s only one straight-up bhangra banger on their recent, self-titled debut album, and that’s “Truck Anthem,” a salute to the many Punjabis driving rigs in western Canada. The album’s lead single and kickoff track, “2Step Bhangra,” gives a better picture of the BILZ’s M.O., with bilingual English/Punjabi vocals (largely unheard of in the genre) care of Kashif and Satnam “So-D” Singh, to match the hybrid groove. Elsewhere are splashes of hip hop, slow-jam R&B, reggaeton, flamenco guitar and blues harmonica, never to mention flavours from across the Indian subcontinent.

Their hard work is paying off. The BILZ have solid mainstream-radio rotation for “2Step Bhangra” in Halifax, Toronto and Edmonton (Montreal programmers, pick up your game!), and Trinidad and Mauritius to boot, as well as play on BBC’s Asian Network and 1xtra in the U.K., and the video on MTV Desi. They’re racked at HMVs across Canada, up for grabs at iTunes and looking at steady global traffic at their MySpace page. A signing with India’s important Times Music label promises to be followed by deals in the UAE, the U.K., Europe and South Africa—all moves towards the big score, which is Desi beats at the top of the pops.

Will bhangra bust out to a truly global audience, and will proud Montrealers the BILZ be riding the crest of the wave? “From what I’m hearing,” says Urva, “the majors are interested. They just don’t know how to market it, and what the outcome will be. It’s tough for us, but we’re hoping to set an example.”

- The Montreal Mirror

"Two-stepping to the Top"

The Bilz, a producer duo from Montreal, have reinvented the two-step in such a way that even a Texas cowboy couldn’t
resist tapping his boot-wearing foot.“2 Step Bhangra” is the first single off the self-titled debut album from The Bilz (Times Music),
consisting of producer DJ Vicious and producer/musician/singer Master-D. The track, featuring the vocals of So-D and Kashif,
fuses desi beats, Punjabi and English lyrics and urban flavor to create a club-friendly joint that’s already making waves across
North America and India.Like the 12 tracks on the album, DJ Vicious and Master-D bring together world music and urban sounds, a formula that’s
worked well, taking the single to two mainstream radio stations in Canada. While DJ Vicious has his ear to the urban music scene
(he started deejaying in his early teens), Master-D is a trained classical musician who grew up playing the tabla and can now easily play a handful of instruments. “Because of my background in classical music, I can integrate eastern and western music and make it sound good,” Master-D says.

“A lot of people just get a beat and make it with a small sample. I bring originality.” “I might find my sound goes one way,”
DJ Vicious says, “ and Master-D will bring me back to the other side.” That other side is where a mandolin or a guitar plucks
perfectly over a Punjabi track; where a South Indian drum creates the beat for an R&B song; and a kanjeera, a type
of small drum, over a hip-hop beat puts a different spin on a commercial sound. “We experiment and keep it fresh,” DJ
Vicious says. “The general Indian (music) mentality is to stick in the comfort zone. If they get popular in one place, they’ll
stay there. You have to take matters into your own hands if you want to move forward. That’s how you distinguish a real artist
from someone who just wants to be famous.”Though DJ Vicious and Master-D shrug off potential fame,
there’s no denying that the potential for obtaining it is within reach. This month they head off for a month long tour in India,
where their album reached No. 18 on the charts within the first week of its release. But it’s not just South Asians who are fans
of their sound. A quick search on YouTube not only brings up the music video for “2 Step Bhangra” but a home video of two
young German men lip-synching and dancing to the track. After the tour, The Bilz will be back in the studio working
on Master-D’s urban Bengali album and R&B singer Kashif’s next release. To buy the album and learn more about The Bilz,

"THE BILZ: International Players"

by Khalid Ilahi

These guys are putting Canada on the map, giving life to an otherwise "dead" scene all over North America. Look out UK & world, here they come!

THE BILZ, its a name you must get used to hearing. These Montreal boys have shook the earth with the release of their debut album and amazing video. Not only did they put together some hot music, they are getting recognition like none before them in the mainstream. They've been getting radio play and just signed a deal with iTunes, making the album available worldwide digitally. Additionally, the album is available in HMV across Canada and they've started to get orders outside the South Asian community proving that they have music, which is universal. Here is our exclusive interview with THE BILZ, Montreal's hottest international urban producers who are about to set 2007 ablaze.

KI: First of all guys, a massive congratulations on a masterful accomplishment! The video for 2Step Bhangra is truly mind blowing. Tell us more about yourselves, who is THE BILZ?
The Bilz (DJ Vicious and Master-D): Hey thanks a lot for the love man, it took a long time in making the album and the video turned out really awesome! THE BILZ consists of DJ Vicious & Master-D and we've been in the scene for over 11 years grindin' through the industry. We're definitely proud to be Canadian artists and producers, representing North America at an international level! We're all about breaking barriers and not lettin' anyone hold us down cause we bringin' that quality that's lacking tremendously in the South Asian scene.

KI: There is no question you've just raised the bar for the rest of the SA artists to reach for. Let's talk a little more about this amazing video. Who directed it? Where was it filmed?
TB: The video was directed by Mathieu Grondin who's part of NuFilms. You could say they are the "go to" guys for the best quality videos and have done projects for Celine Dion, Bob Sinclair and a platinum soul R&B artist in France, Corneille. As you know, we always want to make sure everything we do comes out correct so we did our best to work with the pros. I mean we worked a lot with their team to make sure every aspect came out right by even providing them our own themes. They were really impressed by how involved we were with our own video stressing that not many artists do that. Plus, we did our own casting for the hot girls and Mathieu was really impressed... he was like "hey, I'm going to give you guys a call for that next time!" (laugh). The main setting was inside the prestigious nightclub, Club Newtown in downtown Montréal, which is owned by former Formula 1 racer, Jacques Villeneuve. They were really impressed with the project and were happy to support our video. Moreover, we had to make sure the location looked classy... so it couldn't be just any club. I mean the club has over a million dollars worth of a lighting system and it's a trendy spot as a lounge, resto and a club.

KI: Can you give us an idea of how much it cost to produce such a professional-grade video? We want an exact number, damn it.
TB: Man, a lot of money! Money talks in this business and for all who wonder what those BET videos cost and wonder "Oh, why can't ya'll do something like that?" Well, those video budgets range over $300,000 and are shot in film, which captures more light, gives that quality grain and allows the right shadowing. They shoot for over 2-3 days... on top of that with high grade models that get paid well. So we shot it in film also and with good lighting. But to give you guys a rough idea of what a real quality video costs, ours was over $25,000. I mean everyone right now is trying to throw horrible videos out there, especially from the UK, they are using either camcorders or like 3-4 guys lip singing to the same voice. Like, what are you doing? It just doesn't make sense and I really feel embarrassed watching those Bhangra videos. Even a few major labels in the UK have said that. I mean how do you expect to cross over or gain recognition with a video like that? The music business is about sending a message in an entertaining format, but those videos just don't cut it. On our side, we are very proud that we went the extra mile and produced such a high-end video.

KI: I see you have a lot of hotties in the video, tell me, did anyone get laid during or after the video?
TB: (Laugh) Man you guys are jokes. Do you really think we're gonna tell you that? Well, what I can tell you is, a lot of people hooked up, a few girls were more open and it was a fun experience. We took care of everyone, fed them good, had a few drinks, the models were blazin', numbers were exchanged and yeah, back to 2Step Bhangra! (wicked chuckling)

KI: I see how it is... we've showcased Kashif before on our site, and its really great to see him getting even more popular now. It was great seeing him in the video, he was really the life of it with his dance moves and presence. What is he up to - Desiclub.com - #1 South Asian Entertainment Portal

Bio

THE BILZ vision in production is to always create sounds that are one step ahead of the industry to maintain club and commercial record successes. The Duo consists of DJ VICIOUS and MASTER-D (a.k.a Subir Dev). They are two individuals who have gained a vast knowledge of the music industry in two different dimensions. Master D’s aspect comes from his knowledge of over 10 years of training in Indian classical music, ethnic variety and the fusion of urban music that gives an edge in the creation of an original composition without sampling in production. Through his production years, Master D’s creative composition featured in an independent feature film, entitled Passage to Ottawa which was produced and directed by Canadian film maker Gaurav Seth. This movie won 4 international awards since its release in early 2002. Furthermore, this inspired him to compose sound scores with world music influence.

DJ Vicious’ broad notion of how to handle both, the Mainstream and South Asian music industry with his immense list of industry contacts of both worlds, has given him recognition as DesiClub.com TOP 50 “DESI” (Indians), who have made a difference in North America. He shares rankings with Raj Bakhtra from NBC’s “The Apprentice” & M. Knight Shamalayan (Director of The 6 th Sense). DJ Vicious and Master D put Montreal Canada on the map after releasing their underground south Asian mixtapes series (Insomnia 1, 2 & 3) having unit sales of 800, 1200 & 7000 units respectively across Canada and 1000+ bootlegs across U.S independently!
DJ Vicious’ aspect comes from his knowledge of the urban music industry for over 8 years, from Deejaying and music promotions. He started off touring across North America promoting his mixtapes in various parts of Canada, U.S.A and recently his emergence in the U.K with “THE BILZ” imprint. He opened for MTV’s Funkmaster Flex in Detroit, Jin the MC from Ruff Ryders, Punjabi MC in Chicago, Apache Indian in Toronto and Sean Paul’s After Party in Montreal.

After gaining immense street buzz, the duo got selected to officially remixed BMG Recording Artist, Keshia Chanté ft. Foxy Brown smash single "DOES HE LOVE ME", which had been pressed and distributed to DJS across North America in addition, gaining medium rotation on radio stations in Canada and on BBC 1xtra in U.K. Their achievement lead to live radio interviews on Adil Ray's, Rishi Rich's Kiss100 FM & Punjabi Hit Squad's Radio stations on BBC 1xtra, furthermore, a two page spread article as “Canada’s Next Big Sound” in Cineblitz International Magazine.

THE BILZ’ movement does not stop there. They were the first south Asian production team to release a party break on AV8 Records entitled “GET CONVERTED” which sold over 2000 units across North America and Europe making them raise the bar and giving recognition to Montreal. They then expanded working with artists across North America, Europe and Asia which landed them to officially remix a full length album of various production genres (urban, pop/dance and south Asian) of Canadian/European artist, Chantal Chamandy from Ninemuse Music which reached no.19 on U.S Top 100 Billboard Dance charts and their Reggaeton remix charting no.7 on Latin R&R. In addition, they provided assistant production for McDonald’s Canadian TV commercial which gained rotation all across Quebec, Canada. Furthermore, THE BILZ also remixed two exclusive tracks for female Bhangra artists Malika & Joyti who have recently been awarded “best new comer artists” & “best new album” by ZeeTV. DJ Vicious stays connected with street releases with his exclusive mixtape “IMPERIAL pt.1 and pt.2” which featured artists like Kardinal Offishall, Jin, Sean Paul, from TVT Records Pitbull, Wayne Wonder, Fatmanscoop, Frank & Dank, Juggy D, Jay Sean, Elephant Man and Keiaun the GoldnChild from Dreamcatchers Entertainment. The Imperial series gets distributed all across Canada, U.K and U.S.A especially over the internet.

The BILZ are now ready to showcase it worldwide with their self titled album released by Major recording label, Times Music(INDIA), ENVY Entertainment (U.K), Arviva Music (U.A.E) & HMV across Canada
