"The Bird Sang Song: It Takes a Good Friend"

Edmonton’s local music scene is nothing short of extraordinary, but oftentimes, the city’s talent in outlying areas like Spruce Grove gets overlooked – a shame when there are bands like The Bird Sang Song out there. Luckily, Mark Coughlan (guitar, vocals, piano and mandolin), Kyle Gillis (bass), Curtis Van Brabant (guitar, banjo and vocals) and Kevin Wiebe (drums) are more than willing to make the 20-minute drive in and out of the city for a show. “We get all the benefits of the Edmonton scene without the hassle of having to get around Edmonton,” says Curtis optimistically. “It can be tough after a show having to get everything back really late though,” he admits. Kevin, however, takes a different spin on the location. “I will say it’s kind of cool coming from a small town, because it gives us that simple small-town image and we can all agree that it suits us and our music.”

The Spruce Grovian friends took some time to cook up their project. Before The Bird Sang Song, Kevin and Kyle both played in a former well-loved local hardcore band called The John Spinnaker Project. “I remember before we used to even jam, I would go to their shows at Avenue Skatepark,” recalls Curtis. “One time Kyle and I went to a party after the show and he couldn’t even move his neck because he’d been head banging so hard during his set!”

But as The John Spinnaker Project lost momentum (which is difficult to picture if you ever saw them live), the four patched themselves together through various jams and, to put it simply, clicked. “Kyle, Curtis and I had jammed a couple times but nothing ever really came of it,” says Kevin. “Then a few weeks later Mark and Curtis approached me to jam. I told them I knew a dude who shreds. Since then, it’s been a blast!” Curtis agrees and remarks that the group’s jam sessions came together very naturally. “In all it was really positive,” he comments. “The guys are excellent musicians. Plus when we write our new stuff they will throw in these weird breaks or bass lines that you don’t usually hear in indie, so that’s really fun to work with.”

The Bird Sang Song’s music sounds like it has nothing in common with its members’ former project, but drummer Kevin claims otherwise. “[The John Spinnaker Project] has affected the band quite a bit, in the fact that [it] helped me and Kyle become the musicians we are. I can easily say that if it wasn’t for that band, we wouldn’t have progressed as far as we have.”
The band’s hometown has also had an enormous influence on The Bird Sang Song’s material. “[It]’s the people in Spruce Grove, like our friends, that really inspire our writing,” Curtis adds. “There our so many characters that live here.”

Having recently released their first recording, Goodwill Died With The Century, the band is off to a simmering start – though it didn’t really start there. “When we first started as a band, it wasn’t even two weeks before we got offered a show,” says Curtis. “We only had two songs at the time.” But these are four guys that don’t shy away from hard work. “I think it was within three weeks we put together six songs, all of which are on the EP,” Curtis continues. “We would spend four of five days straight writing and practicing. It was really fun to just sit and create!”

Their hard work paid off – the EP is a sparkling new addition to the local music library. “I love the EP,” Kevin says. “It turned out greater than I could fathom, and I think everyone feels the same. It’s just a party to listen to for me.”

Stir up some impressively diverse talent with hardcore, high-energy, folk-rock, add a twist of indie and salt to taste, and you’ve got the Bird Sang Song. Enjoy.
