Local band The Blacks recently won the Statesboro based Battle for the Boro and have now got a gig lined up in Atlanta at the Masquerade on May 24.
The Blacks, with their current lineup, have been together about eight months said Cagney Hearn, 22 who plays bass.
The rest of The Blacks are Erik Roberts, 22, on guitar and vocals, Travis Anderson, 21 on drums and Blake Axsom, 23, on guitar and keyboards. Hearn, Roberts and Anderson are all from Claxton, while Axsom is from Greenville, S.C. where he stilll lives. Roberts is now living in Atlanta where the band currently practices. Hearn credits Roberts with being the leader and driving force behind the band, though the band is like a family, he said.
They don't sound like many bands in this area, and at first, that might have prevented them from getting some shows, but it has helped them to stand out in the long run.
Right now, all of the band members are either in college or have day jobs, but hope to ultimately be able to make a living playing music. For now, though, they're taking the band's progress day-by-day and lining up as many shows as they can. "There's no gig too small," Hearn said.

Good modern, pop-ish rock? From Claxton?? It's happened before, and it's happening again. These guys are an honest-to-God college indie rock group and worth a listen. - Connect

Bio
After forming in the summer of 2007, the Blacks played their first show a few months later and have quickly become one of the most exciting and unique bands to hit the Atlanta area. The Blacks have a radio friendly rock sound (imagine the Strokes backing Weezer) thats guaranteed to win over even the most casual music fans after one listen. This, along with energetic performances and word-of-mouth, has gained them a dedicated fan base that grows with every show.
A focus on songwriting and infectious melodies is evident in The Blacks' live set, which consists solely of original material. Recently, the band was named winners of the 2008 Battle for the Boro, an annual battle of the bands in Statesboro, GA that featured over 20 regional acts at the 2008 event.
