"Four of the Blues Greatest Female Artists Join Forces on Stage as “The Blues Broads”"

Four of the Blues Greatest Female Artists
Join Forces on Stage as “The Blues Broads”

What do you get when you bring together four legendary female singers from the world of the Blues? The answer is the incomparable stage band The Blues Broads and a show that is heaven sent for Blues lovers everywhere.

All four female singers in The Blues Broads are headliners in their own right. These superstars of the seminal era of the genre do what they do best – blow the house away with soulful, irreverent, throaty Blues sung from the bottom of their hearts – multiplied by four unforgettable voices.

Start with the astounding voice of Tracy Nelson, lead singer of the legendary band Mother Earth. Tracy’s composition “Down So Low” became her signature song and has been recorded by Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, and Cyndi Lauper, among others. After her second album she relocated to the Nashville area. She continues to tour and her current release is “Victim of the Blues.”

Annie Sampson, originally from Louisiana, has a style which exemplifies her deeply soulful roots — whether she’s singing blues, rock, a country ballad, or a modern folk classic. Her career started with a long run with the musical “Hair.” She then became a founding member of the the popular group Stoneground. The band recorded four albums and toured internationally. She continues to work and record with her own group, and she’s an essential ingredient of The Blues Broads.

Not a blues fan alive hasn’t heard Dorothy Morrison’s utterly classic rendition of Oh Happy Day, a song she co-authored and sang for the Edwin Hawkins Singers. The international hit has sold over seven million copies and is considered the “national anthem” of American Gospel groups. Dorothy steps away from the world of gospel to become a Blues Broad, where she lifts everyone up, both musically and personally. She tours and records internationally.

Angela Strehli is probably the most truly “blue” of The Blues Broads. She devoted her life and career to the heroes of that genre, knowing and singing with so many of the greats, from Muddy Waters to Albert King to Stevie Ray Vaughan, and supporting them by helping establish Antone’s in Austin, Texas, known worldwide as a blues Mecca. She migrated to Marin County 20 years ago, and is now part of an historic food and music venue, Rancho Nicasio, where she and husband Bob Brown first organized and presented The Blues Broads.

A frequent addition to The Blues Broads is Deanna Bogart. This Maryland-based blues and boogie pianist / saxophonist combines the energy of 1930’s style boogie piano blues with contemporary blues sounds emanating from places like New Orleans, Chicago and Memphis. Her singing and playing are a dynamic addition to the Broads.

In every show, each artist gives the audience a taste of their individual specialty, and then the women combine voices in ways that make The Blues Broads far more than the sum of its parts. Along with back-up musicians considered to be the best in the business, The Blues Broads provides a musical experience that is truly unforgettable. - N/A
