The B Movie Monsters

Let's talk about one of my favorite things for a moment...underrated movies condemned to the category of "cult and "B-movies". Now, really. That's just a pretty way of saying that almost everyone loves it, but just won't admit it. Well, no more! It's time to celebrate those unsung anti-heroes of the black-and white movies of yesteryear!

Unsung no more, though...for out of the deep grass of Indiana comes...The B Movie Monsters! Despite their questionable origins (because, let's face it- middle America is a scary, scary place to live, boys and girls!), this band manages to rock out all of my favorite movies. With song titles like "The Bates Motel" and "Michael" (as in Myers, from the "Halloween" franchise), there's no doubt where this band draws inspiration from. The horror-themed group, comprised of singer Van Heller, guitarist Dr. Hyde, bassist Nicodemus, drummer Clive Gein, and keyboardist Ichabod (and, I may note, everyone kicks in on backing vocals), could easily fall into the trap of many such bands and focus too much on the image and let the actual talent go by the wayside.

I am more than happy to report that such is not the case! This group of ghouls does a wonderful job in drawing together the delightfully kitschy songs with the early 90's-style punk/horrorwave influences to give an end result as much fun as our favorites like 'Plan 9 from Outer Space'. While it's not some high-gloss, mass-market pop act, the B Movie Monsters hold an undeniably guilty pleasure in making scary super-listenable. When was the last time you could mosh pit to the soundtrack from your favorite Now, there's no need to look foolish, as the B Movie Monsters have converted your into a portable and ever-so-fun format. (I can almost see the late night infomercial now!)

With some more obvious influences like the Misfits (who the B Movie Monsters will be opening for in Detroit on August 8th) tossed in there, these boys manage to capture a sound all their own. There's a little Rob Zombie in there, and a little Danzig, too, but the end result is quite their own. (Everyone has influences, people. Deal with that!) 'House on Haunted Hill', one of my favorites, is undeniably perky and upbeat, considering it's being sung by a guy covered with blood and being performed by a group named after legendary serial killers and creepy monsters! 'Zombie A Go Go' is, of course, sprinkled liberally with great undead samples and again, the music is solid and can definitely hold a candle to the best of those headbangin' dead guys like Rob and Danzig. 'The Earth Died Screaming' has a great old-school punk feel to it, as many of their songs do, complete with the punctuating yells that we all fell in love with punk for. The composition in these songs is really great and shows an adept skill at keeping things from getting too terribly serious, which is just no fun at all!

The B Movie Monsters play out quite a bit in their home circle of states, but I think these boys need to set their sights higher and really get out of middle America. They'd be quite well received in any of the big cities where horror isn't just watched, but made- Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, maybe even sunny ol' Ft. Lauderdale (have you seen the old guys in thongs down here? Tell me that's not horror, and I'll poke out your eyes!) Maybe opening for the Misfits will give this burgeoning group the kick in the pants they need to get outta Dodge...or Indiana, as the case may be.

Final verdict? Definitely a cool combo of fun and scary, this band could-and should!-be going places! They may not appeal to everyone, but who does? And, honestly, the music can hold its own against so many of the tired little local punk bands I've heard in the past few years, and then some! So get a van, boys, hit the streets, and we'll start howling for our favorite B Movie Monsters!

3 Draculas and a Frankenstein (which, I think, equals out to about 4 stars out of 5!)

THE B MOVIE MONSTERS

"perhaps we had better start from the begining..."

It all started in a small town in Indiana, where Van Heller and Dr. Hyde first met. Drawn together by a mutual love for Horror films and punk rock, they started what is now The B Movie Monsters. Clive Gein and Nicodemus were the natural choice for a rhthym section, both very talented and frightening. They had a common goal to have the music revolve around Horror films and things of the undead nature. Not an original premise by far, they knew they needed an element that would set them apart from misfit wannabes. They knew that their bizzare stage antics would never be enough, they needed something more, something sellable. Enter Ichabod, the bands videographer. Ichabod had an extensive knowledge of tech equipment and the undead, the perfect fit! Adding samples and keyboards live was exactly what they needed to set themselves apart from other bands in this genre.

From word of mouth and success of the internet, The B Movie Monsters are steadily gaining fans from all over the world and playing shows in many surrounding states. Achieving all of their previous goals, they now know it is time to make new ones... world domination?
