“…no matter how bad it gets, life goes on…”
The Bones Brothers

Hey, Fearless fans, SouthSide’s back at her favorite hang out for another band review. Tonight was the Chicago debut for Indiana natives, The Bones Brothers. The Bones Brothers, formed in 2003, are Joe on vocals and guitar, Dan on drums and James on bass. This autumn night The Bones Brothers thoroughly entertained the Elbo Room audience with their awesome rock. Recently, the band was on the road promoting their soon to be released album, “Life, Death and Fair Weather Friends.” All the songs performed this evening were off their upcoming CD, so the audience was treated to a free preview. SouthSide must admit that she rarely listens to this type of rock, yet at the end of the night SouthSide was able to see what she had been missing.

A rousing electric riff jump started The Bones Brothers’ set which immediately had SouthSide rocking along with the band. This band was all about having fun on stage. She liked the fast paced tempo of their music especially during the instrumentals. Energetic electric riffs and thumping bass rhythms had many hearts racing. The Bones Brothers wowed the audience with short lyrical phrases which kept the music in the forefront for everyone to hear. The audience responded quite-enthusiastically cheering after the dramatic conclusions of each song. The Bones Brothers did not take a moment’s rest to regroup, and instead kept moving along to the next song.

Besides the rocking music, The Bones Brothers’ lead guitarist on vocals, Joe, truly impressed this reviewer throughout their set. His voice brought out the country sound and feel to the music. The energetic and emotional vocals made you feel the mood of the lyrics. However, there were also times when the lead singer took on a more gentle and soulful quality. For example, in one song his vocals began with rock angst, but then suddenly mellowed as he came to the chorus. The Bones Brothers’ ability to mix up their style within the set kept the audience engaged throughout the evening. This trio of rockers performed an excellent set for the Chicago audience and hopefully they will return sometime soon.

To be frank, in the past this rock genre has never personally appealed to SouthSide, however after seeing The Bones Brothers performance, this reviewer must admit she was entertained by the band’s county style, as well as their ability to work the crowd. Their brand of southern rock blew SouthSide away. Checking out this hot band at their next live performance is highly encouraged. Peace,
SouthSide
